Softball Falls Short to UW-Whitewater, Takes Down MSOE in Florida

CLERMONT, FLA.--The Hamline University softball team faced two contrasting outcomes in their recent games in Clermont, Florida on Saturday as they fell to UW-Whitewater 4-1, and defeated MSOE 2-1.

The Pipers move to 8-6 following the split. The Warhawks stayed unbeaten at 11-0, while the Raiders dropped to 3-8.

UW-Whitewater 4, Hamline 1 (Game One)

The game began with Mikenna Johnson hitting a single, but the Pipers could not capitalize on this opportunity, ending the first inning scoreless. The Warhawks quickly took control, scoring two runs to establish an early lead. In the top of the fifth inning, Hamline's Josephine Cariveau walked and later crossed the plate thanks to a single from Maddie Johnson, narrowing the gap to 4-1. However, the Pipers' offense struggled to generate more runs, concluding the game with three hits and one error.

Maddie Johnson stood out offensively, recording one hit and one RBI. Allison Boynton pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits and four runs over six innings, while striking out one and walking none. Cariveau contributed by scoring one run and drawing one walk, while Gabby Tuhy added one hit in three at-bats, along with two defensive assists. Notably, Boynton faced 26 batters, allowing four runs, three of which were earned, and effectively kept the Warhawks scoreless in the sixth inning.

Grace Wickman recorded three hits, including a double, and drove in one run for Whitewater. Emma Giese contributed with a double and one run scored, and demonstrated defensive skill with three assists. Kaitlyn Weidemann provided another key RBI. On the mound, Josie Hammen pitched five innings, permitting only one earned run, while Brooke Hock recorded a save.

Hamline 2, MSOE 1 (Game Two)

The Raiders struck first, with Jenna O'Donnell scoring after a single and a follow-up hit by Jayda Nelson. Hamline's Elena Martinez reached base with a single and advanced but could not score, ending the first inning without runs. The Pipers equalized in the third when Mikenna Johnson singled, Elena Martinez advanced her, and Jenna Rubbelke drove in a run with a single, making it 1-1.

Hamline took the lead in the fifth inning when Maddie Johnson doubled and Jenna Rubbelke delivered another RBI single, bringing Maddie Johnson home for a 2-1 advantage. The Pipers' defense remained steadfast, allowing no further runs from the Raiders. In the seventh inning, MSOE managed a single hit but failed to convert it into a score, allowing Hamline to clinch the victory.

Jenna Rubbelke was instrumental in the win, delivering two hits and two RBIs, along with a stolen base. Maddie Johnson also shone with a double and a run. Dana Rosbacka pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run over seven innings, striking out two batters, improving her record to 2-1.

The Raiders' notable players included Jayda Nelson, who led with an OPS of 1.333, recording two hits and an RBI. Jenna O'Donnell scored a run and contributed with a hit and a stolen base, while Autumn Sadler, the catcher, added a hit and dealt with four stolen base attempts against her. Pitcher Katie Pollock pitched six innings with seven strikeouts, despite taking the loss.

The Pipers will end their spring trip in Clermont, Florida tomorrow, Sunday, March 23 against Union (NY.) at 10 a.m. (ET), and Lewis & Clark at 12:15 p.m. (ET).
