Pipers Drop Two To Bennies

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Saint Benedict secured two victories over Hamline University at Meredith Field on Tuesday, winning 8-1 and 10-0.

The Pipers fall to 13-21, 3-13 MIAC, while the Bennies improve to 19-13, 11-5 MIAC.

Saint Benedict 8, Hamline 1 (Game One)

The Bennies surged with a five-run seventh inning to finalize an 8-1 win. They took an early lead in the first inning with two runs, capitalizing on an error and key hits. Hamline didn't register any hits in response. Saint Benedict extended their advantage to 3-0 by the second inning with a series of singles leading to another run. The Pipers managed to hold the Bennies scoreless in the third, but their own offense remained stagnant, with only a walk allowing them to reach base.

The game continued with both teams locked in a defensive battle through the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. In the seventh, Saint Benedict exploded offensively, scoring five runs, including a pivotal double and several singles, increasing their lead to 8-0. The Pipers finally broke through in their half of the inning with Gabby Tuhy hitting an RBI double that brought in Mikenna Johnson, but it wasn't enough to change the outcome, concluding the game at 8-1.

Tuhy shone for the Pipers, hitting a double and driving in one run. On the mound, Allison Boynton pitched a complete game, allowing eight runs on 10 hits, while striking out none and issuing one walk over 128 pitches. Johnson contributed with a hit and a run scored, while also managing 10 putouts at first base without error.

Saint Benedict 10, Hamline 0 (5 innings) (Game Two)

The Bennies continued their dominance, defeating Hamline 10-0 in a five-inning contest, highlighted by a six-run burst over the third and fourth innings. Saint Benedict took an early lead again in the first inning with Cat Smetana doubling down the right field line and scoring on a single by Bryn Ruhberg. Hamline managed a single by Abbey Herbert but could not capitalize, ending the inning down 1-0.

The Bennies added another run in the second inning, extending their lead to 2-0. The Pipers were retired in order again, leaving the score unchanged. Saint Benedict's offense exploded in the third inning, scoring three runs, including a run driven in by Olivia Tautges and another scored due to an error, pushing the score to 5-0. Hamline collected another hit but still remained scoreless.

The fourth inning saw the Bennies score three more runs, with Smetana driving in two on a single, and another run following on a single by Megan Erickson, increasing the lead to 8-0. Hamline faced a double play in their half, keeping them off the board.

In the fifth inning, the Bennies wrapped up their scoring with two final runs, resulting in a 10-0 victory. The Pipers managed a hit but could not capitalize.

Herbert led Hamline with a .500 batting average, recording one hit in two at-bats. Maddie Johnson and Maddie Johnson each contributed with a hit in their only at-bats. On the pitching side, Montana Miller allowed six earned runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings. Natalee Boelk entered in relief, conceding three earned runs over 1 2/3 innings.

Saint Benedict's standout performances included Cat Smetana leading the effort with two runs, two hits, and two RBIs. Ruhberg drove in two runs with two hits. On the mound, Olivia Wallace pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only three hits, while Guttenfelder added to the offense with two hits, one RBI, and a stolen base.
