Pipers Sweep Knights On The Road

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Hamline University softball team secured two victories at Carleton by scores of 4-1 (8 innings) and 4-3 on Saturday. This is the first road sweep for Hamline since April 11, 2023, when they defeated Carleton 10-1 and 10-7.

The Pipers improve to 15-21, 5-13 MIAC, while the Knights fall to 10-26, 4-14 MIAC. 

Hamline 4, Carleton 1 (8 innings) (Game One)

Both teams started strong defensively, with no runs scored in the initial innings. In the sixth inning, Hamline's Jenna Rubbelke doubled and later scored on Savannah Johnson's triple, putting the Pipers on the board. The Knights responded with Esme Song scoring in the bottom of the sixth to level the game at 1–1. 

The eighth inning saw Hamline break the game open with a decisive three-run rally. Abigail Chamernick, starting on second, was driven home by Allison Boynton's double. Natalynn Lundeen and Elena Martinez reached base, leading to Josephine Cariveau's walk that allowed Lundeen to score. Gabby Tuhy was hit by a pitch, bringing in Martinez for the third run of the frame, giving the Pipers a 4–1 lead. Hamline's defense held strong in the bottom of the eighth, securing the victory.

Tuhy and Cariveau were notable defensively, each recording four and five assists, respectively. Boynton delivered a complete game on the rubber, allowing five hits and one earned run over eight innings, while also contributing a double and an RBI at the plate. Savannah Johnson highlighted the offensive efforts with a triple and an RBI.

Hamline 4, Carleton 3 (Game Two)

The Pipers took an early lead in the first inning with two runs driven by back-to-back doubles from Bryanna Schaffer and Adriana Wiggins, followed by a single from Livi Peters. The Knights responded in the second inning when Josephine Cariveau doubled, and Abbey Herbert followed up with another double, cutting the deficit to 2–1.

The fifth inning saw Jenna Rubbelke single and steal second, setting the stage for Elena Martinez's RBI double to tie the game at 2–2. In the sixth inning, Gabby Tuhy doubled and was replaced by pinch-runner Abigail Chamernick, who scored on Mikenna Johnson's single, giving Hamline a 3–2 lead. The Knights leveled the score again in the bottom of the sixth with an unearned run, making it 3–3.

In the seventh inning, Jenna Rubbelke reached second on a single and a fielding error, then stole third. Elena Martinez singled to drive in Rubbelke, putting Hamline ahead 4–3. Despite the Knights' efforts, the Pipers maintained their lead, securing the victory.

Jenna Rubbelke led Hamline with three hits and three stolen bases, contributing two runs. Elena Martinez added two hits and two RBIs, including a double in her four at-bats. Gabby Tuhy was notable with four assists playing at second base, along with a hit and a stolen base.

Montana Miller started the game for the Pipers, pitching 4 1/3 innings and allowing six hits and two earned runs, while not issuing any walks or recording strikeouts. Natalee Boelk relieved Miller, pitching 2 2/3 innings, allowing four hits but no earned runs. 

The Knights showcased strong performances in both games, with Bryanna Schaffer leading the way in the second game with three hits, including a double, and scoring two runs. Adriana Wiggins collected two hits, one of which was a double, and drove in one run. Livi Peters made an impact with one hit and one RBI, while also drawing a walk. On the mound, Sydney Trentman pitched 6 1/3 innings in the second game, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits, while striking out three batters. In relief, Becca Madsen struck out two batters in 2/3 innings without surrendering a hit or a run.

The Pipers will host No. 13 Saint Mary's (DH) at Meredith Field tomorrow, Sunday, April 27 at 1 p.m.
