ST. PAUL, Minn. – No. 13 Saint Mary's (Minn.) secured two victories over the Hamline University softball team at Meredith Field on Sunday, winning 1-0 and 5-0.
The Pipers fall to 15-23, 5-15 MIAC, while the Cardinals conclude their 2025 regular season with a 37-3, 22-0 MIAC record
Saint Mary's (Minn.) 1, Hamline 0 (Game One)
The first inning ended scoreless as both sides managed to get a runner on base but could not capitalize. The Pipers made a strong push in the third inning with
Jenna Rubbelke and
Elena Martinez hitting singles and advancing runners into scoring position, yet they left the score at 0–0.
Hamline's defense remained resilient throughout the game, highlighted by a key moment in the fourth inning when Brianna Nusbaum was caught stealing.
Allison Boynton provided offensive highlights with multiple singles, but the Pipers couldn't convert these opportunities into runs. The stalemate finally broke in the seventh inning when Makayla Steffes hit a triple, driving in the only run of the game for the Cardinals. Despite a valiant effort from Hamline in the bottom of the seventh, including singles from Boynton and Rubbelke, they could not score, ending the game at 1–0.
Rubbelke stood out with a perfect hitting performance of 3-for-3 and seven assists at shortstop. Boynton matched her with three hits and pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run on nine hits, with one strikeout and one walk. Martinez also contributed with a sacrifice hit and one hit. Boynton induced 12 groundouts and five flyouts in the game.
Saint Mary's (Minn.) 5, Hamline 0 (Game Two)
The second game saw the Cardinals take control early, scoring two runs in the third inning. Megan McGinnis crossed home plate on a single by Naleyah Bork, followed by Abbie Stigler driving in Bork with a hit to left center. The Cardinals then extended their lead with a pivotal four-run burst in the fourth inning. Peyton Berg's single brought in both Olivia Poulin and Steffes, bringing the score to 4–0. They added another run in the fifth inning when Allison Ciero scored on Zoe Fink's single, concluding the game at 5–0.
Allison Boynton led Hamline offensively with two hits in three at-bats.
Jenna Rubbelke contributed four assists defensively from shortstop, while
Reese Herrig made an impact off the bench with one hit in her only at-bat. On the rubber,
Montana Miller started and pitched three innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while
Natalee Boelk pitched four innings in relief, giving up three earned runs.
McGinnis excelled at the plate with a perfect 2-for-2 performance and four defensive assists. Berg drove in two runs with one hit in four at-bats, while Stigler contributed with one hit, one RBI, and four assists in the field. Kenzie Gatz delivered a complete game shutout, allowing only four hits and striking out three batters. Bork rounded out the highlights with one hit and one RBI, helping lead the team to their second victory of the day.
The Pipers will host Augsburg (DH) at Meredith Field for their 2025 season finale on Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m.
