SAINT PAUL, MINN.--The Hamline University baseball team faced off against St. Scholastica in two games at CHS Field on Saturday night, suffering defeats in both contests by scores of 5-1 and 11-0 (8 innings).
The Pipers fall to 6-29, 1-15 MIAC, while the Saints improve to 19-15, 7-8 MIAC.
St. Scholastica 5, Hamline 1 (Game One)
St. Scholastica opened the scoring in the second inning when Damian Vera walked and later scored on a double by Levi Stubbles, giving them a 1-0 lead. The Saints extended their advantage in the third inning, with Jack Tiemann scoring on a single by Vera and Finley Spicer crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Sam Shopbell, making it 3-0. Hamline managed a hit from
Alexander Hokenson but could not convert any runners, trailing 3-0 after three innings.
Hamline finally got on the board in the sixth inning when
Grant Peltier doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jacob Hasapopoulos, reducing the deficit to 3-1. However, St. Scholastica added two unearned runs in the same inning, ultimately winning the game 5-1. Hokenson had a strong performance for the Pipers, securing two hits and a hit-by-pitch. Peltier contributed with a double and a run scored. On the mound,
Parker Leipzig pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and five runs (two earned) while striking out four.
St. Scholastica 11, Hamline 0 (8 innings) (Game Two)
St. Scholastica took an early lead in the second inning with a sacrifice fly by Shopbell that brought in Spicer, making it 1-0. The Saints continued to extend their lead in the fourth inning when Spicer doubled in a run, followed by an RBI single from Ryan Garlick, concluding the inning at 3-0. In the fifth inning, Adam Braun hit a two-run home run, increasing the Saints' advantage to 5-0. Although Hamline's defense held the Saints scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, the Saints exploded for six runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Shopbell, Kyle Oswald, and Jake Schelonka.
Bentley Casey stood out defensively with five assists at shortstop for the Pipers.
Dalton Maxwell pitched five innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs, striking out two batters.
Teagan Yotter appeared in relief for 2 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits and two walks, striking out three batters, while
Finn Melchior pitched 2/3 of an inning, conceding two earned runs on four hits.Â
St. Scholastica's standout performances included Spicer, who led with three hits (three doubles) and one RBI. Braun contributed with two hits, including a home run, tallying two RBIs and scoring twice. Matt Forrest pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit while striking out five batters. Vera added a double and reached base on a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice, while Stubbles drove in two runs on two hits, including a double, and scored once.
The Pipers will make the short trek to Northwestern (Minn.) for a nine-inning game on Monday, April 29 at 5:30 p.m.
