NORTHFIELD, MINN.--The Hamline University baseball team dropped a pair of 5-4 decisions to Carleton in walk-off fashion on Tuesday in Northfield, Minnesota.
The Pipers fall to 6-31, 1-17 MIAC, while the Knights improve to 11-19, 5-13 MIAC.
Carleton 5, Hamline 4 (Game One)
Hamline took the lead in the second inning, when
Finn Melchior led off with a walk and advanced to third base on a sacrifice and groundout.
Ethan Smith was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for
Ryan Burley's RBI single through the right side, which brought Melchior home to tie the game 1-1. Burley and Smith executed a double steal, with Smith scoring on a throwing error by the catcher, putting the Pipers up 2-1 after two innings.
In the third inning,
Alexander Hokenson and
Grant Peltier both reached base, and
Jacob Hasapopoulos delivered a crucial single to right field. The play was compounded by a fielding error, allowing both Hokenson and Peltier to score, making it 4-1. The Knights responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, bringing the score to 4-3.
The game remained scoreless through the fourth and fifth innings, with Hamline maintaining a one-run lead. In the seventh inning, Carleton's Sam Zacks doubled to lead off. Sam Gossard and Will Schnepf followed with an RBI single and double, respectively, giving Carleton a 5-4 win.
Hokenson played a key role for the Pipers, recording one hit and one run. Peltier also contributed with a hit and a run scored, drawing a walk in his three plate appearances. Melchior led the team with two hits in three at-bats, adding one run and a walk. On the mound,
Sabastian Teague pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and a pickoff. Hasapopoulos was notable for driving in one of the team's runs and achieving a hit-by-pitch in his two at-bats.
Teagan Yotter pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs, and two walks while striking out five batters. Teague delivered a strong performance over 2 1/3 innings, conceding just one hit with no runs, walks, and striking out two, while also picking off a runner.
Dalton Maxwell pitched 1 1/3 innings, surrendering four hits and two earned runs, with two strikeouts.
Zacks made a strong impact with three hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs for the Knights. Sam Gossard contributed with two runs and an RBI. Will Schnepf delivered a notable performance with three hits, three RBIs, and a double, driving in crucial runs for the team. On the mound, Ananth Iyer pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out eight batters over seven innings.
Carleton 5, Hamline 4 (10 innings) (Game Two)
The Knights took an early lead in the first inning with a run after Sam Gossard scored on Ryan Chang's RBI single. Hamline's
Grant Peltier managed a single, but the inning ended scoreless for the Pipers.
In the third inning, the Knights added another run. After Sam Gossard reached third on an error, Aaron Rice delivered an RBI single, putting the Knights up 2-0.
The seventh inning saw a momentum shift as the Pipers broke through with a strong offensive performance.
Grant Peltier's double set the stage for
Stevie Schmitt's RBI single, and
Ethan Smith's two-run single that gave Hamline a 3-2 lead. The Knights responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the seventh, which tied the game 3-3.
In the eighth inning, Hamline capitalized on a Knights error to score
Finn Melchior, which put them ahead 4-3.
Despite Hamline's efforts, the Knights secured the win with a run in the ninth and tenth innings. Jack Hommeyer's bases-loaded RBI single scored Dan Avillo in the ninth inning, which tied the game 4-4. Sam Zacks scored the game-winning run on Aaron Rice's RBI single in the 10th inning, ending the game with a 5-4 victory for the Knights.
Peltier led the Pipers with a strong performance by going 2-for-4 with a double and a hit-by-pitch. He also drew a walk and scored a run. Melchior contributed both offensively and on the mound; he recorded two innings pitched with four strikeouts and one earned run while also driving in a run at the plate. Smith excelled with two hits in four at-bats, driving in two runs and adding a double, while also making five assists defensively at second base.
Bentley Casey pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and two runs, with only one earned run, while striking out three and walking one. During his outing, Casey faced 20 batters and induced six flyouts, but also had two hit batsmen and a balk. Teague contributed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, giving up two hits without issuing a walk or recording a strikeout.
Cameron Hickox closed with one inning, surrendering two hits and one earned run, while striking out one and allowing two doubles.
Rice showcased his hitting with three hits and two RBIs for the Knights. Chang also contributed significantly with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs, while also making an impact on the mound across two innings without allowing a run. Nathan Barnhart was a consistent presence at the plate, collecting three hits in five at-bats. Zacks added two hits and a double for Carleton.
The Pipers will host Augsburg (DH) at CHS Field, their 2025 season finale, on Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m.
