Three Unanswered Goals in Second Half Powers Pipers Past Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. — The Hamline University men's soccer team secured a 3-1 victory against Lawrence in non-conference play at The Banta Bowl in Appleton, Wisconsin on Sunday, scoring all three goals in the second half.

The Pipers stay unbeaten at 3-0-1, while the Vikings fall to 0-2-2.

Hamline was unable to capitalize on its opportunities in the first half despite taking five shots on goal. Lawrence's goalkeeper, Nason Lancina, stood firm, saving four shots, including attempts from Beniam Makonnen and Augustune Feika. Lawrence took the lead in the 33rd minute with a goal by William Mikkelsen, assisted by Pablo Silveira, marking the only score of the half, as Hamline committed six fouls and was called offside once.

The Pipers' offense surged in the second half, overcoming a one-goal deficit to defeat the Vikings 3-1. Makonnen equalized in the 53rd minute with an assist from Clarence Weah and Johanso Camacho. Camacho then put the Pipers ahead with his goal in the 77th minute, assisted by Cris Corrales. Luis Mancilla sealed the victory in the final minute, scored with help from Makonnen. Despite several saves by Lawrence's goalkeeper, Lancina, Hamline's persistent attack proved decisive, with the Pipers recording eight shots on goal compared to the Vikings' three.

Camacho led Hamline with one goal and one assist, contributing to three points and scoring the game-winning goal. Makonnen also made an impact with one goal and one assist, tallying three points and finishing with all three of his shots on goal. Mancilla added to the team's scoring with one goal from his single shot on target. Alec Setterberg, in goal, recorded three saves, helping secure the victory by allowing only one goal over 90 minutes.

Lancina stood out in goal for the Vikings, recording 11 saves across 90 minutes. Mikkelsen made a significant impact by scoring one of the team's goals and leading in shots with five, including three on target. Silveira contributed with an assist, highlighting his playmaking abilities.

The Pipers will travel to Crown on Wednesday, September 10 for a 7 p.m. match.
