Pipers and Pointers Battle to Scoreless Draw

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The Hamline University women's soccer team and UW-Stevens Point played to a scoreless draw, with both goalkeepers earning shutouts in a defensive battle at the Point Soccer Bowl in Stevens Point, Wisconsin on Sunday.

The Pipers move to 1-1-2 overall, while the Pointers go to 2-1-1 on the season.

The first half remained scoreless, with both teams showcasing defensive strength. Maddox Fergus made a crucial save early on, stopping Paige Ostroushko's penalty kick at the 4:03 mark. The Pointers applied offensive pressure, taking several shots on goal, but Fergus and Isabella Jensen managed to keep the net secure. Hamline faced challenges with three offside calls, limiting their attacking opportunities. Despite a yellow card given to Nora Lee of the Pointers, neither team could capitalize, concluding the first half with a 0-0 draw.

The second half began with a flurry of offensive attempts from both teams. Starting in the 47th minute, Paige Ostroushko of the Pointers took a shot that went wide, setting the stage for a series of offensive plays, including a corner kick just a minute later. Hamline's Elysse Tanaka and Kylie Toilolo responded with consecutive shots in the 50th minute, both saved by the home goalkeeper, Shea Lucas. Throughout the half, the Pointers maintained pressure with multiple corner kicks, including a sequence of three corners between the 82nd and 84th minutes. Fergus was instrumental in keeping the score level, notably stopping a shot from Rita Danner in the 85th minute. Despite the numerous attempts by both teams, the half concluded with neither team able to break the deadlock, ending in a 0-0 draw.

Fergus recorded six saves, playing 78 minutes in goal without conceding. Jensen added two saves during her 11 minutes on the field, maintaining a clean sheet alongside Fergus. Addyson Barrett took one shot on goal, contributing to the team's offensive efforts. Alexis Geary attempted two shots, with one on target, adding pressure to the opponent's defense.

For the Pointers, goalkeeper Lucas stood out with a shutout performance, making four saves from seven shots faced. Ostroushko led the team with four shots, putting two on goal, while Emily Miner contributed three shots with one on target. Additionally, Rita Danner matched Ostroushko's shot total, providing offensive pressure with four attempts and one on goal.

The Pipers will host North Central (Minn.) at Pat Paterson Field on Wednesday, September 10 at 4 p.m.
