MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — No. 5 Hamline (14-3-0) fell to No. 3 Augsburg (12-3-1), 3–2, in overtime on Sunday. Despite rallying with two third-period goals, the Pipers could not secure the win in the extra period.
Hamline began the first period with
Kendra Nordick in goal, successfully defending against Augsburg's early offensive efforts.
Ellie Newpower managed an early shot, but it was saved by Kayla Simonson. The team's defense held strong, especially during two power plays when
Lily Svajgl and
Calie Peterson were sent to the penalty box. Key defensive contributions came from
Ashlyn Abrahamson and
Iyla Ryskamp, who each blocked shots to keep Augsburg scoreless. Nordick stayed vigilant, making numerous crucial saves as Augsburg applied pressure late in the period. The scoreboard remained level at 0–0 as the first period concluded.
Augsburg seized the momentum in the second period with a power-play goal by Nora Stepan at 7:06, marking the first goal of the game. Despite the Pipers' efforts to counter, including multiple shots by
Annabel Mehta and
Brooke Klemz, Augsburg maintained their defensive posture, preventing any scoring from the visiting team. Hamline ended the period with a power play opportunity due to a late penalty on Ruby Eskin of Augsburg, but they were unable to capitalize before the period concluded. The period closed with Hamline trailing 1–0.
The third period began with Hamline gaining momentum as Ryskamp won successive faceoffs.
Abigail Chamernick capitalized on this momentum, scoring an even-strength goal at 16:37, assisted by
Hannah Peterson and
Macy Peterson, to level the score at 1-1. Shortly after, Augsburg responded with a power-play goal by Jenna Allen at 13:41, briefly regaining the lead. Despite facing a deficit, the Pipers continued to press offensively.
Ella Rothe managed to equalize with an unassisted goal at 2:20, bringing the score to 2-2. The period concluded with both teams unable to break the tie. Hamline's defensive efforts, particularly by Nordick, kept Augsburg at bay in the final minutes, ensuring the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
In the overtime period, Augsburg won the opening faceoff, setting an early tone. Despite a missed shot by Allen and a wide attempt by Aunna Schulte, Augsburg maintained pressure. The decisive moment occurred at 3:41 when Emma Abrahamson scored the game-winning goal for Augsburg, assisted by Schulte. The game concluded with a 3–2 victory for Augsburg.
Chamernick scored once on four shots, contributing to the offensive efforts. Rothe added a goal and maintained a 66% success rate in faceoffs, winning four of six.
Macy Peterson provided an assist and excelled in the faceoff circle with a 62% win percentage. Nordick finished with 28 saves, playing a crucial role in goal.
The Pipers will be back next weekend with a home-and-home series with the Bennies, starting in St. Cloud on Friday, January 30 with a 6 PM puck drop.
