ST. PETER, Minn. — Hamline (1-6) lost to Gustavus Adolphus (5-2) 55-7 on Saturday. Hamline scored in the third quarter on
Ty Burgoon's 67-yard touchdown reception, its lone touchdown in the loss.
Gustavus Adolphus put the Pipers in an early 7-0 hole with a 65-yard opening drive, moving from its 35 to the end zone on Dylan Blount's 2-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Wold at 10:52 and Jack Sieben's extra point. Hamline moved across midfield on its next possession behind
Daylen Cummings' 12-yard completion to
Ty Burgoon, a third-down run by
Jah Simmons-Dabney and a face-mask penalty, but the drive stalled at the Gustavus Adolphus 41. Gustavus Adolphus crossed midfield on its next series, but the Pipers kept it off the board as
Eliyas Dart and
Elijah Gingras hurried Blount on incompletions before a punt into the end zone. After Hamline's next two drives ended in punts, Blount hit Liam Frommelt for 54 yards to set up another Wold touchdown, an 8-yard catch at 1:32, and Gustavus Adolphus led 14-0 after the first quarter.
Hamline moved from its 19 to the Gustavus Adolphus 48 early in the second quarter, but the drive ended on downs before
Markeith Taylor broke up Dylan Blount's fourth-down pass at the Hamline 40 to return the ball at 11:18.
Daylen Cummings hit
Tristan Falkowski for 14 yards and Simmons-Dabney ran for 20 on the next Pipers possession, but
Elijah Stepp's fumble at the Gustavus Adolphus 26 was recovered at the 29. Gustavus Adolphus followed with a 71-yard drive capped by Blount's 40-yard touchdown pass to Liam Frommelt, and Jack Sieben's kick made it 21-0 at 4:53. After a Hamline punt, Blount added a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Ginskey with 34 seconds left, and Carson Boike's interception set up Blount's 35-yard touchdown to Frommelt with seven seconds remaining as Gustavus Adolphus closed the quarter ahead 35-0.
A blocked Hamline punt gave Gustavus Adolphus the ball at the Hamline 11 early in the third quarter, and Walker Hennen finished the short field with a 1-yard touchdown run at 12:33 to make it 42-0. Hamline's defense stopped the next Gustavus Adolphus threat when
Isaiah Watson intercepted Dylan Blount at the Hamline 17, and the offense turned that takeaway into points on
Daylen Cummings' 67-yard touchdown pass to Burgoon at 4:52. Gustavus Adolphus answered on its next drive, moving 75 yards in three plays and scoring on Blount's 62-yard pass to Liam Frommelt at 3:33. Hamline pushed back into the red zone late behind a 26-yard completion to Burgoon, a roughing-the-passer penalty and a 15-yard throw to Falkowski, but
Kieran Barrientos' 31-yard field-goal attempt was blocked at :21, and Gustavus Adolphus led 49-7 at the end of the quarter.
Gustavus Adolphus opened the fourth quarter by moving from its own 30 into the red zone, with Kyler Kelvie completing passes to Dane Roback for 13 and 8 yards before Christian Rodriguez carried to the Hamline 3. Kelvie finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Owen Watson at 7:42, and the missed extra point left Gustavus Adolphus ahead 55-7. Hamline answered with its longest march of the quarter, as
Joseph McCarthy converted multiple third downs and hit
DeAndre Smith for 28 yards to reach the Gustavus Adolphus 21 before McCarthy's 6-yard run moved the ball to the 9. The drive stalled after a sack and two incompletions, turning the ball over at the 7 with 1:08 left, and Gustavus Adolphus ran out the remaining time to finish the game at 55-7.
Cummings completed 20 of 30 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown and added 15 rushing yards. Burgoon caught seven passes for 120 yards and a touchdown.
Keishion Jarmon led Hamline with seven tackles. Watson recorded four tackles and an interception.
Hamline is 1-6 overall and 0-6 in conference play. Gustavus Adolphus is 5-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Up next, Hamline hosts St. Scholastica on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. at Klas Field in St. Paul, Minn.
