Pipers Battle Hard on Homecoming in 34-21 Loss to Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Hamline lost to Macalester 34-21 on Homecoming Saturday at Klas Field. Hamline threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns but was limited to 78 rushing yards and was intercepted twice.

After each team's first possession stalled, Hamline put together a 70-yard scoring drive from its own 30, converting third-and-10 on Daylen Cummings' 24-yard pass to Ty Burgoon. Cummings later finished the drive at 9:20 with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Aiden Herz, and Kieran Barrientos' extra point gave Hamline a 7-0 lead. Macalester moved 65 yards on the next series, using Jack Scully's 42-yard completion to Jackson Janes to reach the Hamline 2 before Scully hit Will Watson for a touchdown and the extra point tied it at 7-7. Hamline crossed midfield on its next drive before punting, and Macalester's final possession reached the Hamline 25 on Carter Hayden's 10-yard third-down catch as the first quarter ended tied 7-7.

The second quarter opened with Macalester at the Hamline 25, and the visitors finished the drive when Brennan Litchford ran in from 2 yards at 13:08, with Andrew Wetherill's kick making it 14-7. Hamline came back on the next possession, converting third-and-9 with Cummings' 29-yard pass to Burgoon before Cummings hit Tristan Falkowski for a 40-yard touchdown at 10:34, and Barrientos' extra point tied the score at 14-14. Macalester moved across midfield on its next drive, but Allen Walker's 4-yard tackle for loss helped slow the series before a punt, and Hamline followed with a drive to its own 39 before punting. Hamline's defense stopped Macalester's final possession after Xander Fox broke up a deep pass and Robert McCoy hurried another throw, and the second quarter ended tied 14-14.

Macalester started the third quarter at midfield after David Frechette's 41-yard kickoff return and put together an eight-play drive that Jack Scully finished with an 8-yard touchdown run at 9:49. Andrew Wetherill's extra point made it 21-14, and Hamline's next possession was pushed back by a false start and an 8-yard sack before Barrientos punted. Hamline's defense got the ball back after Macalester's following drive stalled near midfield, but the next Hamline series ended when Dylan Jeppe intercepted Cummings at the Hamline 46 and returned it to the 32 with 2:00 left. Macalester used an 18-yard completion to Jackson Janes and a late David Frechette run, plus a Hamline penalty, to reach the Hamline 2 as the third quarter ended with Macalester ahead 21-14.

The fourth quarter began with Macalester at the Hamline 2, and David Frechette scored on the first play before Andrew Wetherill's kick made it 28-14. Hamline moved from its 20 to the Macalester 30 on the next possession, but Patrick Webster intercepted Cummings at the Macalester 10, and Macalester later turned the takeaway into Frechette's 66-yard touchdown run at 6:03 for a 34-14 score after the missed kick. Cummings led Hamline back with completions to Falkowski, Herz and Jah Simmons-Dabney before finding Herz for a 12-yard touchdown at 3:43, and Barrientos' extra point made it 34-21. Hamline got the ball back after a Macalester punt, but its final drive ended on downs at 1:01, and Macalester kneeled out the 34-21 final.

Cummings completed 21 of 38 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns and added 36 rushing yards. Herz caught six passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Burgoon finished with five receptions for 92 yards. Falkowski added five catches for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Hamline is 1-3 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Macalester is 3-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
