Pipers Can't Fight Off CMS In Doubleheader Losses

GAME ONE

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Hamline University softball team (2–9) was shut out by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (6-4-1) with a final score of 8–0 on Friday at Athena Field.

Hamline managed four hits but was unable to score, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps recorded 11 hits and capitalized with a six-run third inning.

Hamline faced Claremont-M-S in a challenging matchup that resulted in a decisive 8–0 victory for Claremont-M-S. In the second inning, Claremont-M-S scored the opening run on a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 1–0.

In the third inning, Claremont-M-S extended its lead significantly. Giselle Lai tripled, and Avia Tuguldur followed with a double to bring Lai home. A fielding error allowed another run to score, and Mrdah Murali tripled to drive in two more runs. Murali later scored on a wild pitch, contributing to a six-run inning. The score after the third inning was 7–0.

Claremont-M-S added one more run in the fourth inning off a single by Imani Ferris, closing the scoring at 8–0. Despite efforts from the Pipers, including hits by Josephine Cariveau and Maddie Johnson, Claremont-M-S maintained its lead throughout the game.

The final score was Claremont-M-S 8, Pipers 0.

Cariveau led the team with a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, both hits coming against right-handed pitching. Johnson contributed with a solid performance, going 1-for-2 and adding an assist in left field. Reese Herrig managed to record a hit in her two at-bats while also maintaining a clean sheet in fielding at third base. Despite the challenges on the mound, Natalee Boelk delivered 3 innings pitched, facing 21 batters and recording three strikeouts.

Boelk pitched 3 innings, allowing 7 runs on 7 hits with 3 walks and 49 pitches thrown, resulting in a WHIP of 3.33. Despite a challenging outing, she kept the strikeouts at zero and managed to record one fielding assist. Montana Miller relieved for 1 inning, conceding 1 run on 4 hits and throwing 13 pitches with 10 strikes, leading to a WHIP of 4.00. Together, the two pitchers combined for 4 innings, allowing 8 runs on 11 hits, with neither pitcher recording a strikeout.

GAME TWO

Hamline fell 7-4 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday at Athena Field. 

Hamline (2-10) scored four runs in the first two innings, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (7-4-1) responded with seven unanswered runs, including three in the fourth inning.

Hamline started strong in the first inning with Elena Martinez singling to first base, followed by Brennan Reid's RBI triple to right field, scoring Martinez. Josephine Cariveau reached on a fielder's choice, but Reid was out at home. Natalynn Lundeen singled, advancing Cariveau, who later scored on Julia Sina's RBI single. Lundeen scored on a fielder's choice by Brie Bakke. The Pipers led 3-0 after the first inning.

In the second inning, Maddie Johnson singled and was advanced to third by Martinez's bunt single. Johnson scored on Cariveau's fielder's choice, extending Hamline's lead. The inning ended with Hamline up 4-2.

The third inning saw Hamline's offense quieted, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tied the game with two runs, bringing the score to 4-4.

In the fourth, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps took the lead, scoring three unearned runs after a throwing error. The inning closed with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps ahead, 7-4.

Neither team scored in the fifth and sixth innings, maintaining Claremont-Mudd-Scripps's lead.

The seventh inning concluded without additional runs, sealing the game for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The final score was Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 7, Hamline 4.

Elena Martinez led the offensive effort with three hits in four at-bats, also scoring one run. Reid contributed significantly with a triple and two hits, driving in one run. Cariveau added to the scoring with one hit and an RBI, also stealing a base. Lundeen recorded a hit and scored a run while adding a stolen base to her performance.

Allison Boynton pitched 3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits with 3 earned runs, while striking out 2 batters without issuing any walks. She faced 19 batters and threw 66 pitches, 42 of which were strikes, maintaining a WHIP of 2.67. Montana Miller took over for 3 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits while recording 1 strikeout and no walks, achieving an impressive strike percentage with 26 strikes out of 32 pitches.
