TUCSON, Ariz. — Hamline (7-8) fell to Wheaton (Ill.) (6-8) in a 15-4 loss on Saturday at Kino Sports. Wheaton (Ill.) capitalized on a six-run seventh inning to seal the victory.
Hamline opened the scoring in the first inning when
Ryan Burley scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Hokenson, taking an early 1-0 lead. However, Wheaton (Ill.) responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, including an RBI single by Sean Dmyotrowicz, putting it ahead 3-1 after one inning.
In the second inning, the Pipers were unable to score, while Wheaton (Ill.) extended its lead. Tyler Burr's sacrifice fly and Charlie Scofield's two-RBI double contributed to three more runs, bringing the score to 6-1 after two innings.
Hamline cut into the deficit in the third inning when
Grant Peltier walked and scored on an RBI single by
Owen Giesen, narrowing the gap to 6-2. Wheaton (Ill.) did not add any runs in the bottom of the inning, maintaining its lead.
The fifth inning saw Hamline make a push with two more runs.
Jack Rheineck scored on a hit by pitch, and Alex Hokenson crossed the plate on a fielder's choice by
Kyle Vanek. Wheaton (Ill.) added one run, making the score 7-4 through five innings.
Wheaton (Ill.) increased its lead in the sixth with a pair of runs from RBI singles by Mason Diel and Sean Dmyotrowicz, extending the score to 9-4.
