SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Hamline University faced off against Gustavus Adolphus College in a doubleheader on Wednesday, dropping both games with scores of 9–2 and 10–8.
In the first game, the Pipers' offense managed seven hits and drew five walks but was unable to overcome the Gusties, who performed with 13 hits. The game saw early momentum shifts, with both teams scoring in the second inning.
Maddie Johnson led off with a single, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then stole home, putting Hamline on the board. The Gusties responded with two runs in their half, taking a 2–1 lead by the end of the second inning.
In the third, Gustavus Adolphus extended its lead with a fielder's choice that allowed a runner to reach third, who then stole home, making the score 3–1. The Gusties continued to score in the fourth inning, with a double from Carly Olson bringing in a run, followed by another run scored on a sacrifice fly, ending the inning at 5–1.
The Pipers held the Gusties scoreless in the fifth but could not contain their offensive surge, as Gustavus Adolphus added two more runs in the sixth with sacrifice flies contributing to the score, leading 7–1. In the seventh inning, the Gusties scored two more runs, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Olson. The Pipers made a late push with
Abigail Chamernick scoring on Johnson's RBI single, but it wasn't enough. The final score was Gustavus Adolphus 9, Hamline 2.
Johnson led Hamline with four hits and two stolen bases, while Chamernick contributed with a hit and a run scored.
Josephine Cariveau added a hit. On the mound,
Montana Miller pitched 4 innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out one.
Natalee Boelk started, pitching 3 innings and allowing 5 earned runs on 6 hits, with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.
In the second game, the Pipers had a strong start, scoring six runs in the first two innings, but could not maintain their lead.
Abigail Chamernick walked, and
Elena Martinez singled, setting up
Josephine Cariveau, who was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Maddie Johnson then singled, bringing Chamernick home, followed by
Brennan Reid's RBI single.
Brie Bakke capped off the inning with a two-RBI single, pushing the score to Hamline 4, Gustavus Adolphus 2 after the first inning.
The Pipers added to their lead in the second inning with
Reese Herrig's single and Chamernick's hit. A sacrifice groundout from Martinez advanced the runners, and Cariveau's two-RBI single extended the lead to 6–2. However, Gustavus Adolphus responded strongly in the third with four runs, including RBIs from Carly Olson and Nicole Westover, tying the game at 6–6.
Both teams scored in the fourth inning, with Paige Gritzmaker's sacrifice fly for Gustavus and Reid's double for Hamline that allowed Johnson to score, ending the inning at 7–7. Gustavus took the lead in the sixth with two runs, capitalizing on a double by Gritzmaker, making it 9–7.
In the final inning, each team added one more run; Gustavus scored on a sacrifice fly by Caitlin Olafsson, while Bakke's RBI single brought
Julia Sina home for the Pipers. The game concluded with a final score of Gustavus Adolphus 10, Hamline 8.
