ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Hamline University Pipers (12–20, 4–10) faced Gustavus Adolphus (14–14, 7–7) in a doubleheader on Monday at CHS Field, resulting in a narrow 2–1 loss in the first game followed by a close 7–6 defeat in the second contest.
In a tightly contested opener, Hamline fell to Gustavus Adolphus, 2–1. Despite a solid outing from
Teagan Yotter, who pitched a complete game allowing no earned runs over seven innings and striking out five batters, the Pipers could not secure the win. Hamline's offensive efforts were highlighted by Alex Hokenson, who recorded two hits and scored the team's only run, while
Grant Peltier contributed with an RBI single.
The Pipers took an early lead in the second inning when Hokenson singled to left field, advanced to third on a balk, and then scored on Peltier's crucial hit, putting Hamline ahead 1–0. However, the game's tension mounted in the seventh inning as Gustavus Adolphus rallied. Ross Hebel's single and a fielding error allowed Simon James to reach base, leading to Hebel's score, tying the game. James then capitalized on a wild pitch to score, giving Gustavus Adolphus a 2–1 lead. Hamline was unable to respond in the bottom of the seventh, resulting in the defeat.
Yotter's performance included allowing 7 hits and 2 walks, bringing his pitch count to 97, with 64 strikes. He suffered the loss, moving to a 1–4 record.
In the second game, Hamline again found themselves in a competitive matchup but fell short, losing 7–6. The Pipers initially took the lead in the first inning when
Jacob Barmore singled down the right field line to drive in
Maddex Van Slooten, who reached on an error. Hamline extended their lead in the third inning, with Hokenson doubling and
Jack Rheineck getting hit by a pitch before Barmore launched a three-run home run.
Ryan Burley added a single to score
Bentley Casey, bringing the score to 5–1.
The Pipers continued to lead, 6–3, after Barmore's fielder's choice allowed Aleks Popovic to score in the fourth inning. However, Gustavus Adolphus responded in the fifth, scoring three runs, including a two-RBI double by Hebel, tying the game at 6–6. The Gusties took the lead in the sixth inning with a solo home run by Brayden Kohls, pushing the score to 7–6.
Despite having opportunities in the later innings, Hamline could not find the equalizer. Barmore led the offense with a home run and five RBIs, while Rheineck recorded three hits and a stolen base. Hokenson and Burley each contributed with solid hits, keeping the pressure on the opposing defense.
On the mound, Hans Christensen started for Hamline, pitching 5 innings and allowing 6 earned runs on 7 hits, including 1 home run. He struck out 5 and issued 3 walks over 88 pitches, taking the loss and bringing his season record to 2–3.
Ben McCrady provided relief, pitching 4 innings and allowing just 1 earned run on 3 hits, with 36 strikes out of 51 pitches showcasing his control.
