Pipers Can't Stifle Oles in MIAC Doubleheader In Northfield

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Hamline University (12-22, 4-12 MIAC) faced off against St. Olaf (12-20, 7-7) in a doubleheader on Tuesday, resulting in two tough losses, 3–2 and 13–7.

In Game 1, Hamline started strong with an unearned run in the first inning, as Ryan Burley reached first on a fielding error and later scored from second on an RBI single by Aleks Popovic, giving the Pipers a 1–0 lead. Hamline extended its lead in the third inning when Burley doubled down the right-field line and scored on a double to center field by Alex Hokenson, increasing the lead to 2–0. However, St. Olaf responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, tying the game at 2–2. The game remained tied until the sixth inning when St. Olaf's Breckin Hadley hit a solo home run to right field, sealing the victory with a final score of 3–2.

Ryan Burley had a noteworthy performance, scoring two runs and hitting a double. Hokenson added a double and one RBI, while Popovic recorded one hit and one RBI with a walk. Bentley Casey pitched a complete game, striking out seven over 6 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits, including a home run, and did not issue any walks. He threw 112 pitches, with 66 strikes, and hitting one batter, showcasing a significant achievement despite the loss.

In Game 2, Hamline initially displayed a strong offensive performance, scoring five runs in the first inning. Ryan Burley was hit by a pitch, followed by a single from Jack Rheineck. After Alex Hokenson was also hit by a pitch, Aleks Popovic singled to center, bringing Burley home. Jacob Barmore added another run with a single, and Maddex Van Slooten drove in two more with a single to left. Kaleb Corcoran's sacrifice fly allowed Barmore to score, putting the Pipers up 5-0. However, St. Olaf turned the tables, scoring six unearned runs in the bottom of the first, taking a 6-5 lead.

Hamline tied the game at 6-6 in the third inning when Van Slooten walked and scored on a double down the left field line by Stevie Schmitt. St. Olaf quickly reclaimed the lead with a single from Jack Pettit, making it 7-6. The Pipers managed to tie the game again in the fifth inning when Van Slooten drew a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Corcoran, leveling the score at 7-7.

The seventh inning saw St. Olaf regain control, scoring three runs with a single from Dex Pudduck driving in two and a triple from Pettit adding one more to make it 10-7. St. Olaf extended their lead in the eighth inning, scoring three more runs to conclude the game at 13-7.

Maddex Van Slooten led the offense in Game 2 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Kaleb Corcoran contributed with two RBIs from his two sacrifice flies, while Stevie Schmitt added two hits, including a double, and one RBI. On the mound, Carter Hoff faced a challenging start, allowing six hits and six runs in just 2/3 of an inning. Lucas Mork provided solid relief, pitching 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and allowing only one earned run. Ben McCrady pitched 1 1/3 innings, surrendering three earned runs on three hits, while Felix Ramos closed out the game, allowing three runs on three hits in one inning of work. 

St. Olaf secured both victories, winning the first game 3-2 and the second game 13-7, leaving Hamline with a challenging day on the diamond.
