Pipers Fall To Bennies 20-5 On The Road

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. — The Hamline University lacrosse team fell to the College of Saint Benedict with a 20–5 loss on Wednesday. Despite the defeat, the Pipers recorded 17 ground balls, showcasing strong efforts in regaining possession.

The first quarter commenced with Rayna Malmberg scoring the opening goal for Saint Benedict at 14:12 on a free position shot. The home team extended its lead with a goal from Lilly Fandel Thompson, assisted by Grace Fitzgibbons, at 12:03. Hamline responded when Lauren Moorhouse scored at 9:36, with an assist from Kayli Starkey, narrowing the deficit to 3–1. However, Saint Benedict dominated the remainder of the quarter, adding five more goals, including a contribution from Lizzie Schrubbe at 2:43, concluding the quarter with an 8–1 lead.

Saint Benedict extended its lead with a strong performance in the second quarter, outscoring Hamline 5–2. Malmberg opened the scoring for the home team with a goal at 12:36, followed by Tess Cavanaugh and another goal from Malmberg. Despite a free position goal from the Pipers' Emma Halweg at 6:11, Saint Benedict responded with goals from Bella Brisk and Sami Hackley, with Hackley's goal assisted by Schrubbe at 1:20. Emma Collins scored for Hamline with an assist from Reagan Zywicki at 3:42, but Saint Benedict maintained control, ending the quarter ahead 13–3.

Saint Benedict continued to extend its lead in the third quarter through a goal by Hackley at 9:59 and a player-up goal by Emma Theisen, assisted by Malmberg, at 7:08. Despite Hamline's efforts, including a save by Ashley Fischer on a free position shot by Halweg, the team struggled to convert opportunities. However, Halweg found the net with a free position goal at 00:20, reducing the deficit. The quarter ended with the score at 15–4 in favor of Saint Benedict.

Hamline's Moorhouse opened the fourth quarter with a goal from a free position shot at 13:44, narrowing the gap. However, Saint Benedict responded promptly as Hackley scored at 12:19. Malmberg further extended the team's lead with a goal at 7:55, followed by Cavanaugh's score at 5:42. Brisk and Theisen each found the net, with Theisen scoring the final goal at 00:32, sealing the quarter with a dominant performance from Saint Benedict. The quarter concluded with the Pipers trailing 20–5.
