LA CROSSE, Wis. — The Hamline University lacrosse team fell to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 16–8 in regulation on Wednesday at Veterans Field in the WIAC Quarterfinals. The Pipers matched their opponent in ground balls with 24 but struggled with turnovers, committing 20 compared to Wisconsin-La Crosse's 17.
Hamline opened the first quarter with a strong start, as
Aoi Suzuki scored the opening goal at 13:52.
Reagan Zywicki extended the lead with another goal at 12:58, prompting a timeout from Wisconsin-La Crosse. Despite the Pipers' early advantage, Wisconsin-La Crosse responded with a goal from Megan Maloney at 10:36. The momentum shifted as Evie Brilz tied the game at 5:08, followed by Emily Wrobbel's goal at 00:57, giving Wisconsin-La Crosse a 3–2 lead by the end of the quarter.
Ema Rehder opened the scoring in the second quarter for Hamline with a goal at 13:02, assisted by
Aoi Suzuki, bringing the score to 3–3. Wisconsin-La Crosse quickly responded with Evie Brilz scoring at 11:18, assisted by Anna Millard, regaining the lead. Zywicki then equalized for Hamline at 10:31, with an assist from
Emma Collins. However, Wisconsin-La Crosse took control with two player-up goals from Tori Katzenmeyer, the first at 6:49 and another at 2:55, widening its lead. Brilz added another goal at 0:51, assisted by Ava Schiltz, concluding the quarter with Wisconsin-La Crosse leading 7–4.
Emma Halweg opened the third quarter with a goal for the Pipers at 14:09, narrowing the gap to 7–5. However, Wisconsin-La Crosse responded swiftly, with Maloney scoring at 12:01 to extend its lead. Millard's goal, assisted by Katzenmeyer at 7:59, and Schiltz's player-up goal on a free position shot at 4:46, further solidified Wisconsin-La Crosse's advantage. Despite a goal from Zywicki at 1:52, Wisconsin-La Crosse maintained control, closing the quarter with a goal by Brilz to lead 13–6.
Millard initiated the final quarter with an early goal for Wisconsin-La Crosse at 14:35, stretching its lead. Hamline responded with a player-up goal by
Kayli Starkey at 11:18, capitalizing on a one-minute green card penalty against Sofia Macias. Despite Starkey's subsequent free position goal at 00:26, Wisconsin-La Crosse maintained control with additional scores from Millard and Katzenmeyer.
