Pipers Drop Pair At Saint Mary’s Despite Extra-Inning Battle In Opener

WINONA, Minn. — The Hamline Pipers (9-14, 1-5) faced a tough doubleheader against Saint Mary's University of Minnesota (16-9, 4-2), falling in both games — first in a tense 1-0 matchup that extended into extra innings, and then in a 6-4 contest.

GAME ONE

In the opening game, Hamline managed only three hits and drew five walks but left 11 runners on base, unable to capitalize on their opportunities. The game was a scoreless battle through nine innings, highlighted by Alex Hokenson's efforts, including a single in the second and reaching base multiple times. However, in the bottom of the tenth, Saint Mary's broke through with Drew Rothenberger doubling, advancing to third on a groundout, and scoring the unearned run on a throwing error, clinching the game for Saint Mary's.

Teagan Yotter delivered a strong performance on the mound for Hamline, pitching 8 innings without allowing an earned run and striking out five batters. Despite this, the loss fell to Ben McCrady, who allowed one run in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Rothenberger shone for Saint Mary's with two hits, both doubles, while Connor Tulley and Mason Windschitl combined for a solid performance on the mound, with Windschitl securing the win.

GAME TWO

In the second game of the doubleheader, Hamline's offense showed more life with 11 hits, including two doubles, but could not overcome Saint Mary's early lead. Gavin Schulte put Saint Mary's on the board first with a single that brought Rothenberger home. Hamline quickly responded in the second inning, with Jack Rheineck scoring on Maddex Van Slooten's RBI single to tie the game. However, Saint Mary's countered with three runs in the same inning, including an RBI double from Ryan Csida.

The Pipers rallied in the third inning, tying the game at 4-4 with a two-RBI double from Van Slooten after Jacob Barmore's RBI single. Unfortunately for Hamline, Saint Mary's regained the lead in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly and a subsequent double, finalizing the score at 6-4.

Jack Rheineck had a notable performance, scoring twice and recording two hits, while Van Slooten drove in three runs. Hans Christensen pitched 4 2/3 innings for the Pipers, allowing six earned runs, while Lucas Mork took the loss in relief. Schulte led Saint Mary's offensively with two runs and two hits, and Maddox Cejka earned the win on the mound.
