SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Hamline University faced off against Bethel University in a doubleheader on Tuesday, suffering defeats in both games, with scores of 10-2 and 11-3.
GAME ONE
In the first game, Hamline tallied eight hits and three stolen bases. The scoring opened in the second inning when Bethel's Molly Closser doubled, driving in a run, leading 1-0. The third inning saw both teams score, with Bethel extending its lead on an RBI single from Greta Stanek, but Hamline briefly tied the game at 1-1 when
Abigail Chamernick scored on an error. Bethel ended the inning ahead 2-1.
The fifth inning was pivotal for Bethel, as they widened their lead significantly. Abby Otterness doubled to bring in a run, followed by a two-RBI triple from Sidney Bartels. Ellie Baker and Kate Kurz each added RBIs, resulting in an 8-2 lead for Bethel, despite Hamline scoring one run in that inning. The sixth inning saw Bethel secure the game further with two additional runs, finishing with a score of 10-2.
Elena Martinez led Hamline in the second game with two hits and one run scored, along with a walk and a stolen base.
Maddie Johnson contributed with two hits, including a double, while
Brennan Reid recorded a hit and a stolen base.
Mikenna Johnson drove in one run.
Allison Boynton pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing 11 hits and 6 earned runs, while
Montana Miller entered in relief.
GAME TWO
In the second game, Hamline recorded five hits, including two doubles. Bethel took an early lead in the first inning, scoring three runs. Ellie Baker drove in two runs with a single to left field, and Lucie Voigt added another RBI with a single to right center, making it 3-0 after the first inning. The second inning saw Bethel extend its lead with two more runs; Abby Otterness singled to shortstop to bring in Julia Helget, and Sidney Bartels doubled, allowing Otterness to score, leading to a 5-0 advantage.
Hamline responded in the third inning with an impressive offensive effort.
Elena Martinez singled to load the bases, setting the stage for
Josephine Cariveau, who hit a double to left center, clearing the bases and bringing in three runs, narrowing the gap to 5-3. However, Bethel added two more runs in the fourth inning, with Camryn Thurow doubling and later scoring on a single by Otterness, while Bartels also scored on a double by Greta Stanek, making it 7-3.
The fifth inning saw Bethel solidify its lead with four runs. Lucie Voigt scored on a single by Mandalyn Franks, and Otterness hit a three-run homer, extending Bethel's advantage to 11-3. Cariveau led the Pipers with three RBIs, and
Abigail Chamernick added a double. On the mound,
Natalee Boelk pitched a complete game, allowing 19 hits and 11 earned runs, bringing her record to 1-4.
