SAINT PAUL, Minn. — The Hamline Pipers (4-15) faced Martin Luther College (3-14) in a doubleheader on Wednesday, resulting in a split of the games. Hamline secured a decisive 7-0 victory in the first game but fell short in the second, losing 6-5 in a closely contested matchup.
GAME ONE
In game one, the Pipers showcased their offensive prowess with a six-run fourth inning.
Julia Sina ignited the scoring with a single to left field, followed by a single from
Mikenna Johnson, advancing Sina.
Brie Bakke's single drove in Sina, while
Natalynn Lundeen's reach on an error allowed Johnson to score.
Maddie Johnson then delivered a two-RBI single, driving in Lundeen and Bakke.
Josephine Cariveau capped the inning with a play that resulted in two more unearned runs, putting Hamline ahead 6-0 after four innings.
Maddie Johnson later extended the lead to 7-0 with a sixth-inning single that brought
Abigail Chamernick home after she had reached base on a walk and stolen second.
Allison Boynton was dominant on the mound, pitching a complete game shutout, allowing only three hits and striking out four batters over seven innings. Her performance secured her second win of the season, improving her record to 2-8. On the other side, Keightan Rank pitched a complete game for Martin Luther, striking out four batters but allowing four earned runs on five hits.
GAME TWO
In game two, the Pipers started strong, scoring four runs in the second inning.
Emilie Kell scored on a single by
Abigail Chamernick, followed by
Elena Martinez delivering a two-RBI single that brought home
Reese Herrig and
Brie Bakke.
Brennan Reid's single allowed Martinez to score, giving Hamline a 4-3 lead after two innings. However, Martin Luther quickly fought back, regaining the lead in the fourth inning with two runs, putting them ahead 5-4. They added another run in the fifth inning, making it 6-4.
In the sixth inning, Hamline narrowed the gap when
Natalynn Lundeen scored on a sacrifice fly by Reid, but the score remained 6-5 as neither team managed to score in the seventh, sealing the victory for Martin Luther.
Elena Martinez stood out offensively for Hamline, contributing two RBIs and drawing two walks.
Josephine Cariveau led the team in hits with three, while
Brennan Reid added two RBIs. On the mound,
Natalee Boelk pitched four innings for Hamline, allowing five earned runs on eight hits, while
Montana Miller provided relief, allowing one earned run in three innings.
