COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — Hamline lost to Saint John's 77-0 on Saturday. The Pipers were held to two first downs and went 0-for-12 on third down.
Hamline moved from its 14 to the 32 on the opening possession, helped by
Daylen Cummings completions to
Jah Simmons-Dabney and
Ty Burgoon, before
Kieran Barrientos punted at 11:13. Saint John's then drove 63 yards in six plays, with Trey Feeney finding Thomas Jacobs for 20 yards to the Pipers 6 and Charlie Plum for a 6-yard touchdown at 9:04, before Westin Hoyt's 45-yard interception return and Matt Hansen's kick made it 14-0 at 8:43. After the Pipers' next possession ended in a punt, Saint John's went 49 yards in eight plays and added Sedrick Melvin Jr.'s 11-yard touchdown run at 3:26. Hamline's following series ended with a Mark Rogalski interception, but
Isaiah Watson intercepted Feeney in the end zone for a touchback with 26 seconds left, and Saint John's led 21-0 after the first quarter.
The Pipers opened the second quarter with two short completions to
Wuoson Nehwah before Barrientos punted, and Saint John's turned its first possession of the quarter into a 5-yard touchdown pass from Trey Feeney to Riley Schwellenbach at 11:33 to make it 28-0. After another Hamline punt, Saint John's drove from its own 31 despite an early false start, converting through the air and on a 10-yard Sedrick Melvin Jr. run before Feeney found Schwellenbach again for a 10-yard touchdown at 7:05. Hamline moved the chains on its next series when Barrientos ran for 14 yards on fourth-and-2, but the drive ended with Peyton Goettlicher intercepting Cummings at the Saint John's 38. Saint John's used the short-clock possession to add a 10-yard Feeney touchdown pass to Sam Nolan with 29 seconds left, and Matt Hansen's extra point pushed the score to 42-0 before
Will Priest's 6-yard run closed the Pipers' final snap of the quarter.
Saint John's opened the third quarter with a 65-yard drive, with Trey Feeney completing five passes, including a 10-yard touchdown to Thomas Jacobs at 11:52 before Matt Hansen's kick made it 49-0. Hamline started its next possession at its own 4 after Watson recovered a muffed kickoff, but the drive lost 3 yards before Barrientos punted and Griffin Murray returned it 34 yards to the Pipers 3, setting up Feeney's 3-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Davis at 10:01 for a 56-0 score after the extra point. Hamline's next series included
Joseph McCarthy's 9-yard completion to
Pharrell Brown before another punt, and Saint John's followed with Reece Dawson's 48-yard touchdown pass to Murray at 5:33 to push the score to 63-0. Saint John's added a 49-yard Dylan Kirchner touchdown run at 2:10, while the Pipers' final full possession ended with Barrientos' 48-yard punt inside the 20, and Saint John's led 70-0 at the end of the third quarter.
Hamline opened the fourth quarter on defense as Saint John's drove 82 yards, with Reece Dawson completing a 22-yard pass to Griffin Murray to reach the Pipers 6 before Dawson found Andrew Schaffer for a 4-yard touchdown at 8:59. Henry Sievers added the kick to make it 77-0, and Hamline's next possession produced four yards before Barrientos punted from the Pipers 29. Saint John's used the final 7:18 on a 12-play drive, converting on third down twice and fourth down once while the Pipers got tackles for loss from
Johnathan Goodwin,
Amere Warren and
Eliyas Dart. The drive reached the Hamline 7 before Kyle Tracy took two kneel-downs, closing out Saint John's 77-0 win.
Goodwin led Hamline with eight tackles. Watson recorded three tackles and an interception. Burgoon caught a team-high three passes for 18 yards. Barrientos gained 14 yards on his lone carry.
Hamline is 1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Saint John's is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
