ST. PAUL, Minn. — Hamline lost to Macalester 3-1 (20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25) on Thursday. The Pipers finished with 47 kills and 95 digs but hit .055 with 37 attack errors.
Hamline held a 13-7 edge in kills in the opening set, led by six from
Sophia Johnson and three from
Lexi Helmin, but Macalester recorded four service aces and took the set 25-20. The Pipers cut a 21-15 deficit to 21-19 with four straight points on
Lydia Graham's serve before Macalester closed out the set.
The Pipers used a 7-0 run, including six straight service points from
Lexi Helmin, to build a 12-5 lead in the second set, but Macalester came back to win it 25-23. The teams finished even in kills (12-12) and service aces (3-3);
Sophia Johnson led Hamline with five kills, while Adonia Anene had four for Macalester, which scored the final two points after a 23-23 tie.
Hamline won the third set 25-22 after a 7-of-8 stretch turned an 18-16 deficit into a 23-19 lead.
Sophia Johnson had six of the Pipers' 13 kills, including the final point, while Macalester finished with 10 kills in the set.
Hamline dropped the fourth set 25-22 despite a 5-1 edge in service aces, with
Lexi Helmin recording three kills and two aces in the set. Macalester held a 14-9 advantage in kills, led by Channing Smith's five, while
Cameryn Sand was credited with assists on all nine Hamline kills.
Sophia Johnson led Hamline with 20 kills and 22.5 points, adding 14 digs and two service aces. Sand recorded 44 assists and 13 digs, with one service ace and two block assists.
Ava Montanez collected a team-high 20 digs and added three service aces.
Claire Siems finished with 19 digs and two service aces.
Hamline is 2-10 overall and 0-1 in MIAC play. Macalester is 6-7 overall and 1-0 in MIAC play.
