Box Score In a game of rallies and counter rallies, the Hamline women's basketball team scored the final 13 points and upended Concordia, 73-66, Saturday in Moorhead.
There were heroes aplenty in this one. Steph Pilgrim (pictured), the leading scorer in the conference, continued her hot shooting with a career high 29 points.
Jordan Sammons added 16, including hitting all six of her free throws in the extra session.
Cassidy Vogt contributed a game high nine rebounds.
It all added up to a big road win that improved the Pipers to 5-5 in the MIAC, 5-8 overall.
At first, it didn't look like it would be a happy trip home. The Cobbers scored the first six points of overtime in just 83 seconds for a 66-60 advantage.
But the Pipers refused to bend.
Danielle Daniels scored her only points of the game on a pair of free throws and Pilgrim followed with a three-pointer to quickly make it 66-65. The rest of it was decided at the line. Sammons, who also had a key steal and rebound in the waning moments, hit all six of her shots and Pilgrim added a pair as well. (For the game, Hamline ended up 16-18 from the line.)
A tenacious defense forced three turnovers as well and that was HU needed to secure the win.
It marked the fifth time in the past six games Pilgrim has scored 20 or more. In those six games, she has scored 142 points. Her 17.2 ppg is nearly a point and a hald better than Sammons, who is second at 15.8 ppg.
The visitors started fast. The Pipers ballhawked the Cobbers constantly in the first half, racing to a 20-5 lead in the first eight minutes. Pilgrim scored 13 points and
Je'Naya Brown added five rebounds as Hamline went to the locker room with a 31-23 edge. The tough HU defense recorded nine steals in the first 20 minutes.
The game changed radically in the second half. After HU got off to a good start to gain a 11-point lead at 44-31, the Cobbers roared back with 16 unanswered points in a five-minute span for a 47-44 lead.
CC stretched their lead to 59-53 only to see the Pipers rally with seven straight points. With HU down four in the final minute,
Kara Poirier nailed a three pointer to make it 59-58. The senior guard then stole the ball and fed Pilgrim for a baseline jumper to put the Pipers back ahead, 60-59. But the Cobbers hit a free throw with 11 seconds left to tie the game and force the overtime.
The Pipers now get a few days to enjoy this one. Their next three games are at Hutton Arena, starting Wednesday, January 16 against St. Benedict.
