Box Score Jordan Sammons fired in 23 points and added 17 rebounds -- the most by a HU women's hoopster in six years -- but she wasn't the only Piper on fire Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena. Four players finished in double digits in Hamline's solid 71-63 victory over Carleton. The Pipers, now 6-6 in the MIAC, took over complete control of sixth place -- the final playoff spot -- with the win.
Sammons (pictured) connected on eight field goals and seven free throws for her points. She added 13 defensive boards as she totaled the highest number of rebound by a Piper since
Shelby Hyllengen recorded the same total November 25, 2006 at Northwestern. It was just two shy of what is believed to be the school record of 19 set by
Katie Jensen in a 2002 game.
As stated, though, Sammons had a lot of company.
Courtney Vogt unleashed 14 points in the first half alone and finished with 16 for the game. MIAC scoring leader
Steph Pilgrim and
Rachel Usgaard kicked in 10 each.
In addition to Sammons, Vogt snared eight rebounds. In all, Hamline had 48 boards, a season high.
HU never trailed by more than a point, forging a 37-29 intermission edge. They kept the Knights at arm's length in the second half to jump a game ahead of St. Olaf.
Kara Poirier had a pair of assists to move into fourth place all time with 215.
The road, however, doesn't get ahy easier next week. Hamline starts a troika of games against St. Mary's (9-3 in MIAC play) Monday night at Hutton Arena. Next Wednesday, they are at Augsburg and the finish the week with a game at league co-leader St. Thomas.
