when
you make them that matter more.
The Piper women's BB team made their last six free throws and their last three attempted baskets in the final 90 seconds of play. And that was enough to hold off Augsburg for a 73-68 win at Si Melby Hall.
Three players --
Steph Pilgrim, Jordan Sammons and
Kara Poirier-- scored 17 points apiece to help HU move back to .500 in league play at 7-7. (Sammons also a game high 12 rebounds -- her seventh double-double of the season and third in a row.)
With eight games to play, the Pipers are in a flatfooted tie with St. Olaf for the sixth and final playoff position.
But it wasn't easy. In the first half, Hamline scored the game's first four points, fell behind by five and then went on a 12-0 run that resulted in a 32-27 intermission edge.
It was still a five point lead in the second half when the Auggies suddenly erupted for a 14-3 run and a 50-44 lead with 10 minutes left. The Pipers then went on a run of their own to regain the lead and, despite a few hairy moments down the stretch when it was shaved to one, held onto it the rest of the night.
In the final minute, Poirier (pictured with ball) , who moved into ninth place all time with 854 career points, hit four free throws and
Cassidy Vogt converted a pair to guarantee the win and a sweep of the season series. Pirier also added three assists to push her career total to 219, tied for third best all-time.
HU, now 7-10 overall, now travel to St. Thomas, which has suddenly lost two games in a row an dis now part of a four-way tie for second place in the conference. The Pipers held the Tommies in offensive check the first meeting before falling 59-41.
