Box Score Tim Bona ran and threw with abandon Saturday, accounting for 311 yards total offense.
Austin Duncan was his usual productive self, running for a pair of TDs.
Anthony Hill was a terror on defense with a game high 15 tackles.
Those numbers ... plus the Pipers coming through with some key defensive stops in the second half added up to Hamline's first MIAC victory under head coach
Chad Rogosheske with a 31-28 triumph at St. Olaf Saturday.
The Pipers improved to 2-3 overall and earned their first MIAC win since 2009 by outgaining the Oles, 417-347.
Bona completed 14 of 25 passes for 215 yards and a pair of TDs. One of those was an 83 yarder to Naji El-Araby, the longest Piper play in 11 seasons. The sophomore also ran for a team high 96 yards in the come-from-behind win.
The game started badly for HU. The Oles took the opening kickoff and went in for a TD. Three plays after the kickoff, they intercepted Bona for a second score. But the Pipers bounced right back with a 65 yard drive that ended with Duncan running it in from four yards out. After stopping the Oles, HU went back to work and struck quickly as Bona found the speedy El-Araby for the longest HU play since
Nate Damman hooked up with
Andy Ryks for an 84 yard score in a 2002 game.
The Oles regained the lead at 21-14 but
Jack Swanberg picked off a pass and ran it back 53 yards to the STO 10 with a minute left in the half. Three plays later, Bona hit
Phillip Sherman in the end zone and it was 21-all at halftme.
The game stayed tied until the final play of the third quarter when
Forrest Coughlin booted a 22-yard field goal to give HU a 24-21 lead. Bona had a big hand in this drive, too, with a 43-yard run that ended at the STO 1.
The Pipers scored again midway in the final quarter as Duncan, who rushed for 95 yards, ran in from three yards away to cap an 80-yard, 14 play drive to up the margin to 31-21. The sophomore gained 95 yards on the day to up his league leading total to 748. His 149.6 yards per game figure also tops the league.
St. Olaf scored in the game's final minute but Hamline recovered the onside kick, ran out the clock and scampered to the bus for a happy trip home.
The Pipers return home next Saturday to face Concordia at Klas Field. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
