Box Score He would gladly have traded it for a win. But
Austin Duncan did something Saturday that hadn't happened in 17 years.
The MIAC's leading groundgainer tore up nationally ranked St. Thomas for 190 yards on the ground and a TD (see picture) to pass the 1,000 yard mark for the season in the Pipers' 43-7 loss at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
The sophomore now has 1,047 yards for the season and is the first Piper to crash the 1,000 yard barrier since
Eric Johnson set the school record with 1,290 in 1996. With three games to play, Duncan is averaging 149.6 yards per game. He has already surpassed his total of 868 yards recorded as a freshman.
The Pipers kept the Tommies in check for the first 23 minutes of play, allowing just one score. But UST struck for three TDs in less than five minutes to jump to a 29-0 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, HU went on a time consuming 70 yard scoring drive that ended with Duncan scoring from six yards out.
Gabe Martinez, making his first start at QB, completed 8 of 12 passes for 51 yards.
Duncan's effort, incidentally, was the most yards St. Thomas has allowed in a regular season game in Glenn Caruso's six years as head coach.
On defense,
Anthony Hill was again superb, making a dozen unassisted tackles and finishing the day with 16 overall. Despite not playing the first game fo the season, the freshman is second in the league with 84 tackles, averaging 14.0 per game.
Hamline (2-5, 1-5 MIAC) returns home for its final game at Klas Fiield in 2013 next Saturday when they host league leading Bethel (7-0, 5-0). The newest members of the school's athletic Hall of Fame will be introduced at that game and honored that night at a banquet.
