12/7/2013 5:12:00 PM

Box Score The Hamline women's basketball team large class of first year is starting to pay dividends. A pair of first year Pipers -- Chloe Graves (pictured) and Chelsey Bonsante joined stalwart Jordan Sammons as double digit scorers in a 84-73 loss at Carleton Saturday afternoon.

Sammons was her usual solid self -- 26 points, 16 rebounds (one short of her career high) and four steals to lead the Hu offense. But she got bigtime help from Graves (12 points, four rebounds) and Bonsante, who came up with10 points, four rebounds and a steal. (In all, Hamline had an excellent game son the boards, finishing with a 49-41 edge.)

As a result, the Pipers were able to stay close despite shooting just 32.5 per cent from the field for the game.

The first half was a wild affair that saw Hamline get ahead by as many as five points. The Knights fought back and the game ended up being tied nine times. Carleton eventually went to the locker room with a slim 42-41 edge.

In the second half, Carleton started fast and built a 14-point lead only to see HU cut it down to six points at 72-66 with 3:35 left. However, that was close as Hamline could get with the Knights using free throws down the stretch to pull away.

The Pipers (0-3 overall, 0-2 MIAC) will have to regroup in a hurry. They have a tough stretch of games next week, starting with a test at St. Benedict on Monday, December 9. St. Thomas visits Hutton Arena on December 11 and the week ends with a road game at Concordia on December 14.
