Pipers Block 3 Extra Points But Lose At Augsburg

9/28/2013 4:38:00 PM

Box Score It's not the sort of record thart is located in any record books. But it was something to take note of. Hamline stopped three extra points but could not hold off a powerful Augsburg attack and dropped a 55-20 football game at Edor Nelson Field Saturday.

HU produced 348 yards of total offense and held the edge in time of possession for the third straight game. But QB Ayrton Scott was handful as a runner and a passer. As a result, Hamline fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the MIAC.

After surendering two TDs in 92 seconds, the Pipers put together a nice 12 play, 70 yard drive that ended with Austin Duncan running in from three yards out to make it 14-6. But the Auggies responded with a pair of touchdown and a field goal. Hamline cut it to 30-14 when Tim Bona (2) connected with Deon Bishop on a 26-yard TD with one second left in the half. Bona then found Hoyfal Adam for the two point conversion.

The Auggies (3-0, 2-0) scored twice in the third quarter but Naji El-Araby got one back with a nine yard TD run. That was as close as Hamline could get, however. Bona completed 21 of 35 passes for 216 yards. (Zach Brautigam wa sshaken up early inthe game and only completed three of six for 32 yards.)

Duncan, who came into the game leading Division III in rushing yards, was held to 58 yards in 21 carries. Still, he leads the conference in attempts (101), yards rushing (529) and average per game (176.3)

On defense, Anthony Hill had an impressive game with 17 tackles, including eight solos. Julian Stubbs had 10, a forced fumble, a blocked extra point and a QB hurry.

Hamline returns home next Saturday to host Gustavus Adolphus in the annual Homecoming game. Kick off at Klas Field is set for 1 p.m.
