Williford Hat Trick Sparks Men's Hockey Past Northland

1/11/2014 6:11:00 PM

Box Score Chris Williford (16) will never forget his first college goal.

Or his second.

Or his third.

The freshman collected his first three collegiate goals in a span of about an hour as Hamline rallied for a 5-4 win over Northland Saturday afternoon at Oscar Johnson Arena.

Brandon Zurn provided the winning tally with 1:55 remaining in a lively affair that saw the Pipers outshot the Lumberjacks, 30-22.

HU was trailing 1-0 in the second period when Williford scored from a sharp angle at 2:03 of the second period. Andrew Carlson followed suit 95 seconds with his first college netter and Hamline suddenly led 2-1.

But no lead was safe on this afternoon. Northland scored a pair 14 seconds apart to regain a 3-2 edge only to see Williford, a freshman from Ray, MI take a pass from Kevin Novakovich and rifle one home to even the game at 3.

The LumberJacks regained the lead late in the session but Williford nullified that one with his third goal on a power play at 13:57 of the third period.

Overtime appeared imminent for the second straight game until Joe Rubbelke spotted Zurn to the right of the NC goalie. Zurn snapped a shot just under the crossbar for his fourth goal of the season. The Pipers held on from there to improve their overall record to 2-10-1.

John Sellie-Hanson had 18 saves in goal for Hamline.

The Pipers head back to MIAC play next weekend. They play at St. Olaf on Friday, January 17. They return to Oscar Johnson on Saturday, January 18. Faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
