Women's BB Falls To Balanced Royal Attack

1/11/2014 4:56:00 PM

Box Score The Hamline women's basketball team threw a solid 1-2 punch at Bethel Saturday. Unfortunately, the Royals responded with a 1-2 punch of their own and added a 3-4 that proved to be the difference in a 76-62 decision.

Chelsey Bonsante had another strong game, scoring 22 points to lead all scorers. Jordan Sammons, the conference's leading scorer, added 19 and delivered 13 rebounds. Sammons continues to inch closer to 1,000 career points. The junior now has 980 for her career.

The Royals, though, showed why they are unbeaten in the MIAC (7-0) and have a gaudy 9-1 overall mark. They had a pair of players register double-doubles for points and rebounds and two other players hit double digits for points. That was enough to send the Pipers to 2-9 overall, 1-7 in the MIAC.

HU started well, leading for most of the game's first 11 1/2 minutes. BU edged out to a 33-28 halftime advantage and started out the second half with a 9-4 run to get the lead to double figures. The Pipers got no closer than six the rest of the way.

The Pipers, who have played just three games at home all season, now play five of their next six games at Hutton Arena, starting with St. Mary's on Wednesday, January 15. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
