Box Score
Sam Stark stared league leader St. Thomas down with a tremendous effort and Corinne Henning provided the offense in a 1-1 OT tie Friday night at Warner Coliseum.
The Pipers earned their first point against the Tommies since a 5-4 win on February 9, 2008.
Stark kicked away 39 to help the Pipers to their second MIAC tie of the season. HU is 3-9-2 overall, 0-7-2 in the MIAC. St. Thomas, rated No. 11 in the USCHO.com poll, is 9-3-3 overall and 7-0-2 in the conference.
It was a tough defensive game from the start. The first two periods were scoreless with Stark and counterpart Alise Riedel taking turns making big saves.
UST struck first 5:31 into the third period. Henning tied the game four minutes later as a UST penalty was ending. Sam Berger led Jaci Reinke, whose shot was turned away. The puck went to Henning, who quickly slapped it into the net for her third goal of the year.
That ended the scoring but not the drama. The Pipers got a rare power play in OT and pressed hard but couldn't get it past Riedel. HU outshot UST, 4-3, in the extra session.
The teams will have little time to ponder the issue. They have a 2:00 p.m. rematch on Saturday at St. Thomas Arena in Mendota Heights.
