Box Score Playing on the road is tough enough. When you fall into an early hole, it can be more troublesome.
That is what happened to the Hamline football team Saturday at Concordia. The homestanding Cobbers, ranked No. 21 in the latest d3football.com, jumped to a 29-0 halftime lead and went on to a 42-7 win over Hamline in Moorhead.
It was the fourth consecutive week that Hamline had faced a nationally ranked foe. They fell to 2-5 overall, 0-5 in the MIAC.
The Pipers recorded 339 yards total offense.
Austin Duncan added to his career rushing mark with 66 yards on 14 carries. But he was nearly surpassed by
Josiah Harris, who ripped off a 59-yard scamper (the longest HU offensive play of the year) and finished with 64 yards.
Tim Bona threw for 149 yards.
Kyle Johnson made the most of his first action at QB, completing four of six passes for 51 yards and a TD.
Defensively,
Anthony Hill (1) led everybody with a dozen tackles. The sophomore now leads the MIAC with an average of 10.1 tackles per game.
Jonny Nguyen had his first career interception as well.
Corey Touchette had his fourth sack of the season and
Zach Schwalbach recovered a fumble.
The Cobbers, who are now 7-1 and 5-1 in the MIAC, took command early, scoring TDs on three of their first four drives. They led 14-0 at the quarter, pushing it to the 29-0 margin by intermission. Hamline stiffened defensively inthe second half, allowing a pair of scores. Johnson and
Tyler Drewlo teamed up for a 25-yard scoring strike with 5:39 remaining for the Hamline score.
HU heads back to Klas Field to face St. Olaf (1-7, 1-5 MIAC) November 1. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
