Box Score On a day when offense was king,
Austin Duncan's star shone the brightest of them all.
The New Orleans, LA junior became Hamline's all-time leader in rushing yardage when he ran for a game high 135 yards in Hamline's 49-28 loss at St. John's, Oct. 4. Duncan (pictured, 28) now has 2,952 yards rushing in just 24 career games, breaking the mark of 2,898 held by
Monroe Walker, who played here from 1977-80.
Tim Bona passed for 304 yards and three TDs as well as Hamline racked up a season high 26 first downs and 473 yards of total offense on a team that entered the day ranked first or second in nearly every defensive category in the MIAC.
The Johnnies, however, took advantage of four Hamline turnovers to lead 28-0 after a quarter and 49-14 at halftime before 9,754 at Clemens Stadium. HU fought back with a pair of second half scores and kept SJU scoreless but fell to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the MIAC.
SJU was leading 35-0 in the second quarter when Hamline's offense began to do some serious damage.
Ryan Ferkinhoff capped a 74-yard, seven play drive with his first of two scores on the day, a two yard plunge. It was on this drive that Duncan, who carried the Ball 30 times, officially passed Walker in the record books. For the game, Duncan outgained the fellow ahead of him in the league rushing race, Sam Sura, a dozen yards. The league leader in rushing a year ago with a 146.0 yard per game average, he is currently second in the league at 163 yards per game.
SJU retaliated after the Ferkinhoff score only to see Bona respond by hooking up with
Hoyfal Adam free for a 12-yard TD. However, SJU ran the kickoff back for a score to end the first half.
In the second half, Bona connected with
Phillip Sherman for a 53-yard score and Ferkinhoff for a 52-yarder. Sherman was the game's top receiver with seven catches for 114 yards.
Defensively,
Anthony Hill led all tacklers with 13 stops, seven of which were solos.
Hamline, which has played just once at home all year, now gets to be in the friendly surroundings of Klas Field for three of the next four weeks. The task won't be easy, though. Bethel (3-1, 3-0 MIAC) visits for Homecoming on October 11. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
