Early Turnovers Costly For Pipers

11/15/2014 4:06:00 PM

Box Score Two first turnovers proved to be too much to overcome as Hamline dropped its final football game of 2014, 13-6, to Carleton at snowy Klas Field.

An interception and a fumbled kickoff led to a pair of Knight TDs in the first quarter. The Pipers got one of those scores back on a Tim Bona to Hoyfal Adam TD pass late in the second quarter. But that was as close as they could get the rest of the way.

The snow began to fall two hours before game time. By the opening kickoff, the field was more white than green. Accordingly, the defenses dominated. Hamline was led by Jonny Nguyen, who recorded seven solo tackles and assisted on six others. Anthony Hill added five solos and assisted on three to finish the top tackler with 94 for the season (56 solo, 38 assists). His 9.4 tackles per game places him third in the conference. Although he didn't get one Saturday, Corey Touchette ended up leading the conference with six sacks.

Hamline's best chance to tie the game came in the third quarter. HU took the second half kickoff and marched to the Knight 8 before being stopped on downs. On their next possession, HU got as far as the Knight 21 before being thwarted.

Austin Duncan, who missed last week's dramatic win over Augsburg, came back with a vengeance, rushing 29 times for a hard fought 131 yards. Duncan finished the season with 1,237 yards on the ground. His 137.4 yards per game ends up second in the MIAC. He added to his career leading rushing totals, ending his junior year at 3,565 yards.

Bona added to his school record for completions by hitting on 18 of 34 passes. His 211 completions for the season is a school record and was the second highest total recorded in the MIAC. His 2,115 yards in the air finished just 31 yards of the school record, set by Tom Hauge in 1991 and ranked fourth in the MIAC.

With a final overall record of 4-6, Hamline finished with its highest win total since posting a similar mark in 2009. 11 seniors and their parents were honored in pre-game ceremonies.
