Box Score Playing solid defense from the first whistle to the last, Hamline's women's basketball team kept Concordia at bay all day and went on to record a solid 69-61 win at Hutton Arena Saturday. The Pipers held the Cobbers to just 36 per cent shooting from the field (19-53 and evened its MIAC standard at 1-1 (4-3 overall).
HU got offense when it needed it, most notably from the triumvirate of
Jordan Sammons (24 points),
Chloe Graves (16) and
Chelsey Bonsante (13). They also survived foul trouble that sent Sammons and starting center
Alex Peterson to the bench early in the first half.
Their absence was not felt as much because of a suffocating defense that kept the Cobbers shooting long distance most of the day. CC hit just four of 18 three-point tries.
Sammons had the hot hand early, scoring her team's first 11 points before being saddled with a second foul seven minutes into the game. Graves then picked up the slack with 11 points of her own and HU went into halftime with a 32-25 lead. When the second half began, the well-rested Sammons scored six quick points as HU jumped to a 40-29 advantage. The lead later blossomed to 13 points at 56-43 with 9:22 remaining. After that, the closest the Cobbers would get the rest of the day was the final margin of eight points.
The Pipers shot 48 per cent for the game (24-50), a season high. They also held a slight 35-34 edge in rebounds with Graves leading the way with eight.
Hamline stays busy next week with a pair of games. It starts Monday, December 8 with a return trip to Northwestern in Roseville.
