Box Score It was a script the Pipers' women's basketball team had seen before. Only this time, they switched the ending to something very enjoyable.
Hamline outscored Augsburg, 9-3, in the final 2:22 of play for a 67-62 victory in an intense game Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.
Jordan Sammons, who scored seven of those points in the final stretch, led all HU scorers with 19 points. But there were plenty of other heroes to share center stage.
-
Chelsey Bonsante hit two key free throws in that final stretch and scored 12 points.
-
Je'naya Brown nailed 11 points and contributed a pair of steals.
-
Rachel Usgaard was the top rebounder in the game with 10. She added three assists and a game high three steals.
The Pipers trailed, 32-25, at halftime. But that was a moral victory considering the fact that Auggies shot 59 percent from the field.
When the second 20 minutes commenced, the Pipers quickly tied the game at 36 only to see the visitors, who were still in the running for a postseason berth, get the next six markers. Undaunted, Hamline to even things at 42.
From there, it remained tight the rest of the night. Augsburg crept to a four-point lead at 52-48 with 6:11 left. Hamline responded with seven in a row to go up 55-52. The Auggies tied it at 55, 57 and 58 and took their last lead at 59-58. Sammons then hit a three-pointer and Bonsante buried a coiuple of free throws to make it a two-possession game. Augsburg hit one more trey and then made the obligatory foul.
Sammons, however, closed the books with a pair of free throws to clinch the win that improves Hamline to 7-15 overall (6-13 MIAC).
The Pipers now play their next two games on the road, starting Saturday at St. Olaf. Game time in Northfield is 1:00 p.m.
