Larson, Lee Win Races As Men Tracksters Take Third

Before the MIAC Track & Field meet began, veteran HU coach Paul Schmaedeke was asked where he thought his team could place. "We are capable of making the top three sports," he said. "We have a lot of guys who could finish in the top four in their events."

The veteran mentor turned out to be happily accurate.

Led by Tom Larson (pictured) and Amani Lee (who finished first in the 100 Meters and the Triple Jump respectively), Hamline finished third in the annual event held May 9-10, finishing with 110 points. HU, which edged St. John's by two points, improved by 24 points from their fifth place 2013 finish.

Larson, who was third in the 100 last year as a freshman, conquered the field in the time of 10.85 seconds. He also was second in the 200 Meters, finishing in 22.27 seconds.

Lee's 46-2 leap in the Triple Jump bested the field by more than a foot.

As Schamedeke hoped for, the Pipers did more than win two events. They placed high in several events.

In addition to Larson, Hamline got second places finishes from Mark Volker (Pole Vault), Eric Hanson (110 Hurdles) and Anthony Tyler (Discus).  Andrew Ferguson, who was fourth in the Decathlon a week ago, ran a strong third in the 400 Hurdles and also finished fifth in the 110 Hurdles.

Will Warmka ran a solid fourth in the 400 Meters. Travis Latzke contributed points with a fifth place showing in the Triple Jump. Joe Matheson came in seventh in the Pole Vault (as did the 4 x 400 Relay team). The duo of Ryan Peterson (Steeplechase) and Freddie Galloway (200 Meters) also scored points with eighth place finishes in their events.

Combine that with Friday's efforts and the Pipers had a solid showing, trailing only St. Thomas (172.5) and St. Olaf  (159) in the final point totals.
