W Basketball Team Gives Their Parents Quite A Show

1/31/2015 7:09:00 PM

Box Score Before Saturday's women's basketball game, the Hamline players took time to thank their parents. Then they went out and really gave them a show.

Hamline shot 51 per cent from the field and held off a late Gustavus Adolphus charge for a thrilling 82-79 victory at Hutton Arena. The Pipers severed a four-game losing streak in style by shooting 51 per cent from the field, including connecting on 10 three-pointers.  Although they used just seven players, Hamline seemed the fresher team most of the afternoon in climbing over the .500 mark at 10-9 overall. They stand 5-7 in the MIAC, two games out of the final playoff spot.

Jordan Sammons led the parade with 26 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Chelsey Bonsante (pictured) was close behind with 19 points (four of which were long distance efforts) while Chloe Graves added 15 and Emily Behrman chipped in off the bench with a season high 15.

The game was the reverse of their first meeting. That day in St. Peter, GAC jumped to a big lead only to see HU come back strong. The Pipers fell two points short in the end.

This time, Hamline came out firing. HU hit eight of 11 three-point tries . Behrman, who came into the game averaging five points an outing, had 11 herself as Hamline grabbed a 49-36 lead after 20 minutes. They picked up where they left off in the second half, getting as many as 20 points ahead with 12 minutes to go. Then the Gusties went to work. GAC cut the lead to six with 5:14 left. HU pushed back to 10 at 79-69 with 2:49 remaining. Graves, Behrman and Alex Peterson hit free throws in the late moments to secure the win, their second in three years over the Gusties at Hutton Arena.

Hamline plays on the road next week at Bethel (Wednesday, February 4, 7:00 p.m.) and and Macalester (Saturday, February 7, 1:00 p.m.).
