Box Score Hamline had three players in double digits for points and a fourth for rebounds. But St. John's broke away from a 70-all tie with five straight points and held on for a 82-73 OT decision Wednesday night in Collegeville.
HU came very close to going on the plus side of the .500 mark but fell to 5-6 overall, 2-4 in the MIAC.
Dior Ford tied his season high with 22 points.
Austin Johnson had his 10th double digit game of the season with 15 and
Dylan See-Rockers (pictured) tied his season high with 13.
Travis Johnson snapped off 11 rebounds -- the first time this year a Piper had recorded double digits in this department -- and added a game high four steals.
It was a game that rolled back and forth a lot. There were 12 ties and 15 lead changes in the first 40 minutes of play. The Pipers led by as many as eight in the first half and went to intermission with a 32-28 advantage. The Johnnies quickly tied the game but HU responded and stayed ahead -- albeit by thin margins -- most of the second session. Austin Johnson's three-pointer with 45 seconds remaining gave Hamline a 66-59 lead. However, the Johnnies hit a pair of two-pointers and tied matters with a last-second three-pointer to force overtime.
In the five-minute session, Ford's layup gave Hamline the early edge at 68-66. SJU tied it up only to have See-Rockers give HU its last lead at 70-68 with 3:52 remaining. St. John's scored the next seven points for a 75-70 lead. Travis Johnson then connected on a long distance shot get Hamline back with in a pair at 75-73 with two minutes left. Unfortunately, that would be it. HU missed a three-pointer and SJU hit a long one and four free throws.
The Pipers play at MIAC co-leader St. Olaf Saturday. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
