Box Score It wasn't the way
Luke Lindquist wanted to get in the game. But when starting QB
Kyle Johnson went out with a first half injury, Lindquist stepped and threw for 227 yards as Hamline's football team rallied from ane arly deficit to grab a lead on nationally ranked St. John's in the second quarter. But the Johnnies responded in kind and wore the Pipers down, 41-21, at Klas Field Saturday.
SJU scored the game's first two touchdowns. But
Jack Swanberg blocked his third kick of the year on the extra point try and HU came to life quickly. Lindquist, a sophomore from Plymouth, Minn. found
Philip Sherman for 28 yards and, on a third and 18, connected with
Nick Kampa (pictured) for 23 yards to the SJU 17. Four plays later,
Josiah Harris barrelled in from four yards out and the place began to rock. The Pipers forced a punt and marched down the field again with
Naji El-Araby scampered in from seven yards out.
Kale Wurdeman's second extra point gave HU a 14-13 lead.
St. John's, however, scored in the final minute of the half to regain an advantage and then added a pair of TDs in the third quarter.
The teams exchanged scores in the fourth quarter with
Austin Duncan adding to his school record with a 13-yard dash. Duncan was the top HU rusher for the day with 73 yards on 19 carries.
Terry Pegues had a superb defensive game for the Pipers with a dozen tackles, including eight solos.
Darrian Smith added seven solo stops.
Hamline heads on the road for two weeks. They play at Bethel (3-2, 2-1 MIAC) next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. On October 17, HU visits undefeated St. Thomas.
