Box Score He has only been the starting quarterback for three games. ButÂ
Justice Spriggs (pictured) is quickly making a name for himself.Â
The freshman tossed four TD passes -- the last of which went toÂ
Jamian Maes with 20 seconds to play -- as part of 259 yard effort as Hamline rallied for a 31-30 victory over st. Olaf in Northfield Satrurday. It was the second year in a row the Pipers had claimed a dramatic win over the Oles.Â
Philip Sherman, who caught the Hail Mary TD on the last play of last year's game, had a big piece of the action here with a 14 yard score in the frantic fourth quarter.Â
Spriggs completed 18 of 33 passes and stretched his streak of not throwing an interception to 108 throws.Â
He kicked things off with a 63 yard strike to
Brendan Nachtrieb in the first quarter. The Pipers dodged a couple of bullets as the Oles twice drove deep but missed field goals. St. Olaf did get in gear in the second quarter and raced to a 16-7 lead but Spriggs connected withÂ
Ryan Ferkinhoff (who also rushed for a team high 80 yards) on a late TD and it was 16-14 at halftime.Â
Kale Wurdeman's 21 yard field goal in the third quarter gave HU a brief 17-16Â lead only to see the Oles drive the field, score and hit on a two-pointer for a 24-17 advantage.
That put the ball back in the Pipers' court -- and they promptly went 61 yards in 11 plays with Spriggs connecting with Sherman for the TD. Wurdeman's extra point tied the game at 24 with 12:45 left.Â
This was a day (958 yards between the two teams) and the Oles came right back with a TD. At this point,Â
Jack Swanberg stepped up and blocked his fourth kick of the year. The missed extra point kept the score at 30-24 -- a key moment in the game.Â
With 2:52 left, Hamline started out on its own 41. Ferkinhoff kept the drive alive with a four yard gain onn a fourth and one. On third and 10 at the Ole 20, Spriggs rolled right and spotted Maes in the end zone for his first collegiate TD. Wurdeman added the key extra point and HU was ahead for the last time. St. Olaf advanced to the HU 48 but a last second pass was batted away and the Pipers had their third win of the season against five losses. Â It was also the third straight year Hamline had beaten the Oles.Â
Hamline now returns home to face Augsburg at Klas Field in their home finale on Saturday, November 7. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
