Box Score Four days after recording a career high for points, Hamline sophomore guard
Chloe Graves went one better. Her running mate
Chelsey Bonsante did the same thing.
The pair led the way as Hamline stayed alive in the race for a MIAC playoff spot with a solid 92-67 win over Carleton at Hutton Arena Wednesday night.
Graves fired in 32 points -- one more than her previous career high four days ago at Macalester and Bonsante (23) hit five three-pointers on her way to a 23-point night (adding a team high eight rebounds as well) to help the Pipers move within a game of Augsburg and St. Benedict for the sixth and last playoff spot. With three games left, the Auggies and Blazers stand 8-7 while Hamline is 7-8.
HU, which won just seven games last year, is now 12-10 overall. With the MIAC's leading scorer
Jordan Sammons still sidelined with injury, they took charge of this one early, holding the Knights to just 32 per cent shooting from the field en route to 44-23 intermission edge. Carleton shot significantly better (60.7 per cent, to be precise) and got within 11 points on a couple of occasions in the second half. But each time, Hamline answered quickly -- often with one of the dozen three-pointers they hit during the game. In addition to Bonsante's long range success, Graves nailed three and
Makenzie Lee added a pair. The 12 treys were a season high and just two short of the team record.
HU also was efficient at the free throw line, hitting on 12 of 14 tries.
It was the second year in a row a Hamline player has scored 30+ plus in consecutive games. Sammons did it last year in the first two games of the season.
Hamline plays its final home game of the season Saturday against St. Olaf (9-13, 6-9 MIAC). Game time at Hutton Arena is 1:00 p.m. The Pipers finish the season on the road next week at St. Catherine (February 18) and St. Thomas (February 21).
