Mens Basketball battles St. Olaf Into 2 OT

2/14/2015 6:01:00 PM

Box Score On Senior Day, the Hamline men's basketball team gave it the old college try ... and then some ... against powerful St. Olaf. The Pipers chased the Oles, who are just a game out of first place in the MIAC, all over Hutton Arena for more than two hours before eventually giving way, 100-88, in double overtime. HU had five players in double figures and led in both halves and both overtimes in a tenacious battle from start to finish.

Dior Ford (32) -- one of the four seniors honored in pre-game ceremonies --  played all 50 minutes and scored 17 points to lead HU, which is now 10-13 overall and 7-11 in the MIAC. Travis Johnson had 15 points and a team high six rebounds. Austin Johnson (24) - another senior honored -- and Quinton Garvis scored 11 points each with Zach Smith contributing 10.

It was a back and forth game almost from the start. There  were 17 lead changes and 14 ties. The Oles led 38-37 at halftime only to see the Pipers break out of the gate fast in the second half. HU had a nine-point lead at 59-50 with 8:57 left but the Oles chipped away and tied the game on a three-pointer with two seconds left in regulation. In the first extra session, Garvis' three-pointer gave HU a 84-83 lead but the Oles, who shot 35 free throws to the Pipers' 17, hit one with seven seconds left to tie the game and force a second five minute period.
Hamline took the lead twice in that period as well. The last time was at 88-87 on a Smith layup. The Oles then scored the final 13 points -- the last six of which came on free throws when Hamline was forced to foul.

The Pipers shot 50 per cent from the field (33-66) and stayed close on the boards as well. (St. Olaf ended with a slight 38-36 edge.) Hamline also did well when they got to the free throw line, connecting on 14 of 17 tries.

Hamline gets right back in action Monday with their final home game of the season against Augsburg (11-11, 8-9 MIAC). Game time is 7:00 p.m.
