Becky Egan came away satisfied. "Our goal was to take two out fo three and we did that," she said after Hamline swept away Simpson, 3-0 but fell to host UM-Morris by the same score Saturday. Counting a 3-0 sweep of Bethany Lutheran the night before, Hamline ended the first week of play with a 3-2 overall standard.
The Pipers proved to be morning glories in their 10:30 a.m. match with Simpson.
Julia Zolnosky, who was named to the All-Tournament team, had 17 kills and was backed up by
Jena Meyer (11) and
Marisa Franco (10).
Amelia Jensen (pictured) had a game high 35 assists while Franco finished a double-double with a dozen digs.
Jamie Rubbelke had a similar effort.
HU won a pair of 25-20 decisions and then had to work overtime for a 29-27 win to sweep away the Storm. Hamline hit .234 for the match.
The hometown Cougars, one of the top teams in the UMAC, however, were tough to handle. UMM committed just 11 errors and hit .293 in winning three straight 25-17 verdicts. Zolnosky cemented her All-Tournament honors with a team high 14 kils. Jensen, who leads the MIAC with over nine assists per set, had 19 to increase her season total to 164, also tops in the circuit.
Miquel Green was the top back liner with 11 digs.
Hamline returns to Hutton Arena Wednesday to face Martin Luther. They go on the road again next weekend in a tournament at Stevens Point, Wis.
