Box Score Last year, Zach Smith was an easy choice to be a member of the MIAC Men's Basketball All-Freshman team. Alas, there is no All-Sophomore team. If there was, the Burnsville, Minn. native would be a prime candidate. Instead, he may be landing a place on the All-Conference team. Three days after registering a career high for points with 25, Smith came back to torch St. Olaf for 23 more and added a career high seven assists in an 87-73 loss to St. Olaf at Skoglund Center in Northfield.
Smith hit all eight of his free throws to move into fourth place among all MIAC shooters with an 83.3 per cent mark. His assist total rates even higher. He now has 65 for the season which ranks third best in the loop.
Smith was joined by Herbert Tarpeh and Travis VanElsberg on the point parade. Tarpeh (50), the only senior on the team had 12 markers and a career best nine rebounds and VanElsberg added 10.
After trailing by as many as seven, the Pipers scored eight of the last 11 points in the first half to trail by just 31-28 at intermission. HU trailed 36-30 early in thesecond half when Smith and VanElsberg teamed up for a 9-2 run that gave HU a 39-38 edge with 16:00 left. It rocked back and forth for the next six minutes with an Ethan Scheuring jumper tying the game at 51 with 10:12 left. St. Olaf then took off on an 13-2 run and the closest the Pipers could get the rest of the way was nine points.
Hamline is now 4-14, 2-11 in the MIAC. They return to Hutton Arena for a pair of games next week. Augsburg visits on Wednesday, February 3 (7:00 p.m.) with St. Thomas coming in on Saturday, February 6 (1:00 p.m.)
