Womens BB Rallies But Falls to Gusties

1/9/2016 5:27:00 PM

Box Score Hamline women's basketball team outscored Gustavus in three of the four quarters played Saturday at Hutton Arena. Unfortunately, the one quarter that went to the Gusties was enough to hand the Pipers an 81-71 loss.

HU bolted out of the gate quickly and led 15-6 after the first 10 minutes of play.  GAC struck back with a ferocious second quarter that saw them hold a 30-6 edge and go the locker room with a 36-21 advantage.

Thanks to some sharpshooting by Chelsey Bonsante, who scored 23 of her game high 25 points in the second half, HU held a 31-28 in the third 10 minutes and a 19-17 edge over the final 10 minutes. They worked the Gustie advantage down to seven points but get no closer and fell to 3-10 overall, 1-5 in the MIAC.

Chloe Graves scored 18 points and Haley Greene continued her strong play with 11. Allison Bartak was the top rebounder in the game with nine. The Pipers outshot the visitors from the field by a 51-42 percent margin. But, as happened on Wednesday against Augsburg, they were victimized at the free throw line. The Gusties hit on 24 of 35 tosses while the Pipers went 14-17.  Graves was a perfect 6-for-6 from the stripe. Bonsante went 2-for-2 and has now made nine straight free tosses.

Hamline now heads out on the road for three straight games. They play at Carleton Wednesday, January 13. Game time in Northfield is 7:00 p.m.
