Brendan Nachtrieb. Dogged by injuries that limited his playing time int the season's first three games, a healthy Nachtrieb had a big day Saturday in Hamline's 34-31 loss to Carleton in a game played at Northfield High School.
The junior rushed for a touchdown and threw a 47-yard scoring strike but a field goal on the last play of the game dealt the Pipers their first loss of the season. HU is now 3-1 overall, 1-1 in the MIAC.
It was a tight, taut tussle from the start. Nachtrieb's toss to
Harrison Jones opened the scoring with the game less than three minutes old. The Knights responded in kind but HU went ahead in the second quarter when QB
Justice Spriggs connected with
Josiah Harris on a nine-yard scoring play. Carleton pushed ahead 16-14 but Spriggs raced in from 11 yards away and HU led 21-16 at halftime.
Nachtrieb ran one in to give HU a 28-16 lead. Carleton cut that to 28-23 .
Kyle Johnson's 37 yard field goal midway in the final quarter gave HU a 31-23 edge. The Knights, however, scored the game's final 11 points to earn the victory.
Spriggs completed 19 of 24 passes for 269 yards. Harris and
Deon Bishop were his top targets, grabbing five throws each.
Jonny Nguyen had a big day on defense with 11 tackles, including eight solos.
Zach Schwalbach had 10 tackles and broke up two passes.
Mitchell Maday increased his league lead in sacks with 1.5. He now has six for the season.

Hamline returns to Klas Field to face St. Olaf for Homecoming on Saturday, October 8. Kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m. -- the first night HC game in school history. In addition to the usual HC activities, the 1966 Piper team -- which won the MIAC title -- will be honored at halftime. Dick Mulkern, who was the head coach for that team, is expected to attend.
