Kampa Has Big Day For Piper Football

10/15/2016 6:47:00 PM

Box Score A healthy Nick Kampa makes a world of difference to the Hamline football team. The senior wide receiver has been dogged by injuries the past two season. But he is healthy and running like a colt this year. He also is showing good hands, which were on display Saturday in Moorhead when he snagged 11 passes for 141 yards, a touchdown and a two point conversion in the Pipers' 34-14 loss to the Concordia Cobbers.

Hamline outgained CC, 312-269, had more first downs (20-17) and led in Time of Possession (30:56-29:04). But the Cobbers took advantage of four interceptions, a missed field goal and a touchdown at the end of the first half to drop the Pipers to 4-2 overall, 2-2 in the MIAC.

Justice Spriggs' right arm was busy. The sophomore quarterback completed 33 of 53 passes for 222 yards and a TD. The 33 completions ties a 61-year old record set by Jerry Foley on October 8, 1955. The 53 pass attempts is believed to be a school record. For the season, Spriggs has thrown for 1785 yards, less than 400 from the school record for a single season. He leads the MIAC in five of the six available offensive categories.

Kampa was his main target today. The senior, who also rushed the ball twice, collected a six yard strike for the Pipers' first score int he third quarter. It was his third TD of the season. He caught the two point conversion from Spriggs in the fourth quarter as the Pipers tried to rally.
Ironically, his longest catch of the day came on a pass from fellow wide out Deon Bishop. The play covered 54 yards and is the longest Piper offensive play of the season in 2016.

After a scoreless first quarter, CC scored three times in the second stanza. The second of those scores was an interception return for a score that put HU in a 14-0 hole. The Pipers responded with a 17-play drive but it ended when Kyle Johnson's field goal try was ruled no good. The Cobbers scored on the last play of the half to make ti 21-0 at intermission.

Bishop's pass to Kampa was a major factor in a 62 yard drive that ended with Spriggs and Kampa connecting for the score. The extra point was blocked and it remained 21-6.

After CC scored early in the fourth quarter, Hamline responded with another long drive -- 72 yards in 15 plays. Jaimen Hampton finished it off from two yards out and the Spriggs-Kampa connection clicked for two to make it 27-14. But that was close as HU could get.

The Pipers got a superb defensive effort from LB Luke Trudell, who had 10 solo tackles, including a sack.

Hamline stays on the road next Saturday, October 22 when they visit undefeated St. Thomas. Game time is 1:10 p.m.
